Hope someone can help.
My 99 Td5 has developed a new noise over the last couple of days. Yesterday morning it developed a sort of grinding noise coming from the drivebelt area and this morning the grinding noise turned into a sort of whirring noise what gets louder as I accelerate.. Its very annoying! Iv also noticed momenterally loss of power steering since the noises developed.
Thanks for your help.

if you have the engine at tickover is it noisy and does the noise get louder up to around 2000 rpm. (not driving the landy)

Yes, its a low whine at tick over it does get progressively louder the more I accelerate both in neutral & driving along.

could possibly be your crank pulley startin to break up, nowt serious but you will want treplace it before it goes bang.
Open the bonnet with the engine running try and get a look at the crank pulley, get someone to rev it gently and see if the pulley moves about a bit causin the belt to vibrate, you will possibly need to replace the belt aswell

There does not seem to be any movement in the pulley but if I was to take off the belt & then start the engine, if I still have the noise its safe to say its the crank pulley & if the noise isnt there it will be something else. Will it be ok to take the belt off & fire the engine up for a few seconds? It wont break owt will it?
