how long should the glow plug light stay on in a L-series diesel? mines on for 3 secs but if i test the plug on the bench it takes 13-15sec to glow.

i'm struggling to start it from cold in the mornings or if left for more than a few hours, i tried priming it this morning by squeezing the bulb till it went hard, made no difference? also should the bulb stay hard like it does on my boat? the one under the bonnet goes soft/empty in maybe 30sec with the engine not running

Never timed mine, but even on the coldest mornings, my glow plug light is out before my SRS light.. and then starts instantly with no problems.. When warm, its only on for a second at most...

hmmm mine is always 3secs whatever the temperature.... i put 3 new ones in only trouble is they were britpart.... any reccomendations for a proper makes of glowplugs??

Ask your local motor factor .Be nice and ask for a trade price ,you will be back there very often .

edit :I just goooogle earthed Clifden .Seems your a bit far from anywhere .I like it .

4.5secs @ 0degC

Given what you say it might be worth changing the ETC sensor as this controls glow duration and influences injection timing. If that makes no difference then check and adjust cam and FIP belts/timing.
