Hi, Apologies to all as I have not been on the forum for quite some time as I had to get rid of my old Discovery 1 (Due to unemployment) and have been without a vehicle for about a year. I have just bought a Discovery 2 TD5 2001 reg (pre facelift).
I have decided to start and do the TD5 up and wanted to put an A-Bar / Nudge bar (preferably the STC50021 that looks like this http://www.4x4shop.se/grafikk/STC50021.jpg ) I have just been told by one retailer that it is illegal to fit this type of front protection to my vehicle. I have looked around on the net and can't find any info about this. Can anybody out there shed any light on the subject for me. I still see many Land Rovers and other 4X4's driving around with similar A bars fitted and wondered if the retailer was mistaken.

Regards
Mark

I thought you could because they were all being made of a softer foam rather than metal nowadays

Hi, thanks for your replies. Unfortunately every online retailer I find that advertises these A-Bars is saying that they can no longer sell them because they are illegal. I too thought that all that had been done was that an EU directive had been created that all A-Bars had to conform with not that they had been outlawed altogether.
If anyone knows where I can get my hands on one of these A-Bars I would be grateful.

So does that mean that you could get pulled over and done for having one on then?

This is what I am trying to find out??? Basically where i live I have seen 2 Discovery 3's with a similar A Bar. There are quite a few Discos, Defenders etc all with various Bull / A Bars on them driving around. The only information I have is from retailers who won't sell me one because "They are illegal" yet I can find no information about this anywhere. I have basically decided to buy one anyway (If I can get someone to sell me one that is lol!!!) and if the Police pull me I am gonna play ignorant and remove it if required.

I have found this site of a shop in Worcester where they are still advertising the older nudge bar for sale online. SPECIAL OFFER Discovery 2 - A Bar ABS Quick Fit. I spoke with another shop who said this older sort are illegal and the new bars are arond £230 now! If i was you i would go ahead an just order it off this site and see what happens!

Hi, Many thanks. Unfortunately it was this shop that first told me they were illegal and can no longer sell them.... surprisingly though they are still advertising them???????? I placed the order online and the next day a guy from the shop rang me to say they couldn't sell me one.

Did the shop that told you the new ones (I am presuming legal ones) are around £230 happen to say if they sell them or where does.
Thanks again

No, not yet anyway, there just not allowed to sell any.

Well to be more correct, there not allowed to sell any manufactured after 09/06 (or summit like that) as makers are still making them for america's/africa. Just not allowed to be sold in europe. And now they've run outta stock (had trouble getting a full bar a while back, sent payment to 2 sites and 2 refund and me sorely p'eed off)

Only chance now is 2nd hand or a crap plastic one (or maybe import one??)

Hi, Thanks for that. So basically at the moment if i can get my hands on one and I fit it, it is unlikely that i will be pulled over for it at the moment. I will let you know how I get on.
Many thanks again

The garage i spoke to does sell them an he had just got 1 in yesterday for a customer. It was the new legal type too! But as he is a small local garage near me with no internet site an he dosent take cards either i should imagine this is of no use to you at all!! I searched the net an the new bars are on the bearmach site so check out the link and there might be a distributer near u. Bearmach Limited - The UK's largest Supplier of Land Rover Parts and Accessories. Hope this helps!

Hi, Many thanks for that. Will definitely check it out.

Hi Guys,
I am really really keen to get one of these A-Bar's with the mounting points for dual spotlamps for my Discovery 2 (2001MY), but like the originator of this thread I have had no joy finding one.

Keep getting told by various Landy dealers that these A-Bars are no longer made/sold as they are illegal, yet earlier in this thread someone states a 'new version' has been made available which is legally ok.

Can someone help please, would even consider a good condition used item.

Thanks in advance.

Steel bullbars can no longer be manufactured or offered for sale. so the replacement alternative is made of ABS plastic

Thanks guys, so does anyone now where I can get the ABS/Plastic one please?

No joy with ringing the usual dealers this morning...

ps - anyone got one for sale.?

They can still be sold "if" they are in current stock, retailers are not allowed to sell / buy in, any more (steel type) once their stock has gone, and as you correctly say, the ABS type "pedestrian friendly" ones are their only option.

And its not "illegal" to fit one to your Disco either. You could always import one from outside the EU tho

Still ok to fit a solid metal winch bumper and stick 40KG's of winch in it as that don't hurt pedestrians.................STUPID UK / EURO's rules again......

PS the full wrap around version seems to be available, STC50020.........not cheap tho
