I have a 98 D1 and both my sons have fallen in love like I did. I have a daily and another 98 D1 without an engine. Besides another 4.0 or 4.6 what easily (relative I know) would mate to the transmission the easiest?
 
The transmission that the engine left the factory attached to would be an instant success, easy as well.
 
I don’t understand, I’m sorry. I still have the trans, what engine or engine trans combo would fit and mate up the easiest.
 
Stock 3.9 will work..

A 4.0 is a 3.9 same stroke same bore etc etc.

Not sure about the bell housing bolt pattern, though..

Just rebuild your current unit.

Put a mild cam in it for more torque and you're all good.

The motor is gone and I’m trying to decide if putting something in it or parting it out so others can finish their projects and look for one to buy.
What did it have fitted when it left the factory?

4.0 v-8

4.0 V8 is what was fitted to the 1998MY of the D1 when the vehicle left the factory, the 4.0 litre (3,947cc) GEMS engine was the same engine that was fitted to the second generation Range Rover (P38) here in the UK.
If you can find a 4.6 litre engine from a RR that will also fit to the existing transmission, as will the earlier 1995-96MY 3.9. with the standard Lucas-Bosch injection system.

Thank you Sir, always so willing to help. It makes working on these vehicles a lot more telerable when your getting things done not just wasting time. Do you know at any other motors from other mfg. that fits the trans/bell housing?

No I don’t.
But other engines, mostly Japanese diesel, have been fitted to the D1 in the past over the years here in the UK, but by people with a fully equipped workshop and the automotive/engineering skills to go with it, and they are stick shift, and not automatic gearboxes and then the vehicle was for competition use.
So alternative engines to LRs can be fitted but not ‘plug n play’.

Yes sir I understand, just in the last couple of days I have seen 4.0 and 4.6 motor for sale for reasonable prices. The mechanic that I met when I got this one had become a great friend and wealth of knowledge, he lets me use a bay/lift on his shop whenever I need so rebuilding one would be easier. Again thank you for your time.
I have noticed there are a lot of rules in the forum which scares me from asking too many questions or starting my build thread so I can keep track of what all I am doing to it. My immediate issues a high idle and just general knowledge of what the AEL is all about. I can fill up the fuel tank in less that 30 minutes. It acts full.

It can be done, not easy.but a very exciting ride when done for sure.

Rules :D there a couple I know of in the buying/selling section I know of, but go ahead with your build thread, the quite a few already that are interesting with the amount of work carried out, and of course the attached photos.

As your using a GEMs engine there’s more that a few RR owners in the Forum to help and more than a few for the older 3.9 and even earlier 3.5 EFI and carb engine... so ask your questions:)

And a start a thread on your idle issue etc in this V8 Forum, again photos saves a lot of words.
High idle speed, the idle control valve is normally a prime suspect, faulty or simply needs a clean.

Will that be the ZF4HP24 that the 4.6 RR uses? Better to have the correct gearbox then.

Yes and apparently depending on year/ number of the 24 they are different lengths ( still researching this myself so please don’t take that as written in stone)
The 22 can have 24 internals put in. That I do know.
And also fitting issues with the 24 to LT230( again as above)

Good read thanks.
I also know that the 4.6 has the biggest tc which only fits in the corresponding bellhousing.
And the length of out put shaft to 230 seems in question.(still for me)

As for OP,SBC is a very good option as ease of bits for him, gearbox questionable, 350 (5.7 to us mere mortals?)is common for him in every car he looks at. Electrics would take more research but all doable:) there are a few good threads on here from long ago in a defender.
Oh and my 383:D

So many options depending on money/ease & drive ability,
I hope this turns into a build thread

Well my mechanic friend made some decisions for me over the last few days. I did tell him to take what he had to have for his customers and he did and he took the hood and drivers fender off sanded and painted them for mine! So it’s awesome but it’s makes the black one too far away for me to get going again. With the issues I still have on mine. Dash lights shifter lights go out when I switch headlights on, all the bushings below have to be replaced, blower motor is loud and weak, both sunroofs leak, headliner, and finding a new wife mine is almost done with me and this Discovery.
