thought the battery in my 95 Chev went bad; replaced with a new one and now
it is dead. The engine will not even begin to turn over while jumping the
battery; instead of the familiar 'click - click' you would get with a near
dead battery, its more of a 'clank - clank' - even while being jumped. I
have tried a battery charger for several hours, still no start. Is this a
starter problem? Would it cause a battery to not even charge up? or
separate issues? any advice appreciated....

You are talking either a dead starter or more likely a dirty connection
on one of the battery cables. Don't forget the battery cables have 2
ends...

If it is the starter, then your headlights should still work...

If it is the starter you can hit it with a hammer and sometimes get
another start out of it.

If you hit the starter with a hammer and it works for you replace the
starter. I try not to use the hammer trick due to now a day starters field
windings are not make like thay use to be and you will end up doing more
dammage then good but if all else fails. I agree with checking both pos
and neg battery cables. Grounds are a cause of alott of problems. If you
over charged a new battery you could of sulfited the battery. Take the
battery to almost any parts house & they can ck it. If it is good ck you
cables for bad connections or a bad cable. If that is not it take the
starter out & have the parts house ck that. This is all free for cking the
Battery & starter. With out being there I would guess the nose bushing in
the starter is out and it is buinding up. This is if there is nothing
wrong with the engine and I won't get into that. Good luck....
