Hi guys

I've got an issue with 4th gear. (R380, LT230, 300tdi). between ~35-40 I get a lot of vibration. I'm not talking "struggling" groans and vibes, I mean right through the gearbox. If I stay in 3rd, or jump up to 5th, the vibration suddenly stops; so i imagine its an issue with 4th. Looking around, all I can see suggested is UJ's. I did all mine about a 2000 miles ago. I've only really noticed this in the last 500miles. I've checked the UJ's again and everything seem's as it should. Any ideas? I'm desperate to rebuild the box's but cant do anything till after Aug as we have a 3 week trip planned. Fingers crossed everything will be ok up-to and during the trip.

Secondly, I did a full oil change today on diffs, engine, gearbox and transfer. Everything was fine until it came to undoing the drain plug for the transfer. It was finger tight.. Somehow, no oil has been lost :s. Last time I tightened this, I did it to the correct torque setting, but the aluminium thread on the casing is as good as gone.

The way I see it I have two options.

1. Rethread the casing.
2. Seal the drain plug and drain by removing access panel in the future.

Any support for option 2?

Cheers

helicoil drain plug thread ,and there is no 4th gear its just the connection of input and output shaft ,might mean theres an issue with layshaft

helicoil drain plug thread

ok, cheers.

ah of course, but then wouldn't I notice it through all the gears? hmm, could it be then that when in 4th, although the layshaft is spinning, it isnt under any load, therefore vibration becomes more apparent? which i guess would also mean the vibration would be there in neutral too, though may not be as noticeable?

I'll see how things go. As mentioned, I want to do a rebuild so if all stays well until I do, its not a HUGE issue. I'll just keep away from 4th at those speeds as much as I can for now and monitor if things get worse..

Do you run a garage/workshop btw? If so, it would be great to bring my old mans disco over. We're in Lincoln/Horncastle. Something's not right but 3 garages can't seem to find out what.

A rather crappy description of the issue can be found on this thread.
