Wondered if anyone could help. As the title says I have a 90 with a 4L v8, its a 1990 'G' plate. I have two issues. One is the Alternator. Its running kenlow fans but even with the fans off the Alterntor still hasn't got anough power to keep the Battery charged (new battery). Does anyone know of a company selling higher output Alternators?

Second problem is it likes to run hot or at least I think so? It has a standard 90 temp gauge and it likes to run near the red side of the temp gauge. Do these engines run hotter than the original 3.5 v8 it had? I was thinking about removing the thermostat to see if it runs cooler.

Also is it easy to wire in a second battery with a split charge?

Many thanks in advance...

On the temperature side of things. My 3.9 sits just below the half way point on the standard 90 gauge and it doesnt budge. So something cant be right?

My setup is a single leccy fan, new full front rad and an adjustable thermostat kit for the fan.

Does it have the right temp gauge sensor on the engine? Needs to be the one from the 90.

Not sure if it is the original one?

I thought it would be better to have a original single fan fitted rather than the twin Kenlow fans as they use a lot of juice.

I think the temp gauge must be right thinking about it as it does get quite warm inside the cab. It rises up the temp gauge really quick from cold and then stays a fraction under the red level so I assume the thermostat isn't working right.

Where did you go for the adjustable thermostat?

Hi Hammoj, I have a 3.9 fitted to my 90 - everything is excellent, except that the temperature seems to run just a little hot on the guage - just past 12:00 O'Clock.

Do you know if the 3.9 sensor is different to the factory fit 3.5 I had in there before.

Cheers

Hmmm, id prefer twin kenlowes as id assume they'd be better for cooling? Are they kicking in?

My fan controller came from rally design. Its a fantastic bit of kit.

Does the engine smell hot? Should be able to tell especially if its running near the red.

Im not entirely sure what temp they are meant to run at, but maybe thats a bit hot imo?

I cant personally tell you if the sensors are different as i dont know, not sure where find out either. Id always try and stay with the original temperature sensor though just to be safe, so the one form the 3.5 might be an idea for peace of mind?

had the same problem, gauge reading high, when i changed mine. use the sender from your original engine.

It does smell a little hot and certainly feels hot in the cab. The fans are wired to a switch on the dash which is good but as the alternator isn't working as it should the fans drain the juice from the battery. I assume these fans are ok when the alternator is running right?

When the fans are switched on it doesn't really make too much difference to the temperature, that's why I was thinking the thermostat must of had it. The fans are pretty powerful though.

Are there many different types of Alternator for these engines, Also where would the engine number normally be stamped?
