I have some bizzare goings on with my windscreen wipers/horn/central locking. The wipers can set off on their own anytime, the wiper switch having no effect and will sometimes continue to wipe even with the ignition off! This can sometimes be pre empted by the horn failing to sound and the central locking shunting back and forth, other times the wipers will stop on command but park randomly anywhere on the screen. is this something anyone else has encountered or, should I just join the circus. Thanks in advance

You joined January 2011, you are in the circus ;)

Sounds like 2/3 problems.
Auto electrician look at wipers/horn id do - or ask a member called Datatek, good with P38 electrickery

I have heard of issues where the headlight wipers failed to park themselves properly. Cannot remember the symptoms off the top of my head. @Saint.V8 or one of the gurus might with any luck.

Any damp on carpets on driver's side?

Lift the carpet in the drivers foot well and look/feel for damp.
Yeah, it is a wee bit damp on the drivers side foot well, not swimming but a bit damp. Where is that coming in from and is it the answer to the electrical issues? I have replaced the heater matrix o rings in the past but, it doesn't seem to be coming from there.

Check the air con drains are clear you can find them either side of the gearbox coming throw the floor, lay under car arm up give a squeeze and get a sleave full of water:D

There is a very good chance that the wet carpet is the source of your problems. Corroded connectors on the BECM or even condensation and corrosion inside. The connectors can be cleaned with contact cleaner such as Aeroclene 50 and a brush, DO NOT use WD40
On the scuttle between the bonnet and the windscreen, you will see some screws, leakage round them is common, sealing with silicone does the job. The pollen filter covers are also prone to leaking, again silicone sealant along the top and down the side fixes it, take the pollen filters out and check if they are wet first. The plenum drains can also become blocked.
