Is there any knowledge out there about how the 4.4 TDV8 version of our beloved l322 is behaving? Would it be a worthy successor to the Golden Girl or has it reached the 'faults are just showing' stage?

I don’t know much about them but TDV8 compared to the TD6 will be a massive improvement and probably double the tax but who cares .Sure its a ZF box and 8 speed I think. Same as any car you will get good ones and bad ones. Much faster, I think they may be a twin turbo but not sure and could be a small turbo and bigger one

I'm at the stage of looking but not ready to take the leap yet. Would I be correct in saying the L405 came in very quickly after the 4.4 TDV8? If so I might be as well looking at those?
The tax etc, doesn't bother me. I don't drink, don't smoke/vape, don't do drugs ( except the prescribed ones), don't spend money on crap, (apart from the RR),. Basically the RR is my favourite waste of money , so ....................

The L322 ran up to 2012 which is when the 405 started, at a guess I would say it’s the same Ford / Jag 4.4 v8 diesel in both essentially but I’m not sure what the difference is between the TDV8 and SDV8, might be turbos or just mapping.
The 405 is still around the high 30 40K isn’t it ?
They also do a 3.0 TDV6 which would still be a massive jump over Goldie.

Engine wise I took quite a drop from the D2 V8 to Goldie, so it might be nice to have it back :D I was thinking more along the lines of , would I just be buying a 4 -6 yr old vehicle that is going to start throwing tantrums, as she did, just when I've done most of the big things on the Golden Girl. I usually change my veh every 3-4yrs but this one got under my skin , hence having her so long. By my usual pattern I should already be on a 2011/2012 , and ready to change again, so I'm getting the 3 year itch creeping up, for the fourth time :D
So was wondering if the fails and horror stories had started trickling through yet or if they were proving to be more reliable , with better matched engines and gearboxes?
I was looking at a nice 2014 405 , which was just over 30k. Or I could stick with the L322, which on a 2012 are as low as 13k or up to 20k

Oops forgot to add , I have a standing 15 -30% discount with the stealer, so makes buying a 405 from stealer a better deal than similar age l322 elsewhere.

If you have the moolah then the L405 would be a massive upgrade imo.

Notwithstanding the leap in handling dynamics, refinement and tech, the 405 is now all aluminium construction with a remarkable weight loss of nigh on 500kg over the 322, so the fuel economy and PTW ratio is as good as it will ever get (barring EV).

I believe the poverty spec TDV6 405 feels similar in oomph etc to the 4.4 TDV8 322.
You'll probably hate the 322 if/once you upgrade.

No idea about them other than that I'm afraid.

I really am at the strong pull stage. However, I never rush into buying a car. I've been the same since my very first one. Even when changing from the D2 to the L322 I searched for over a year, including engaging the services of a car sourcer, to get exactly what I wanted :oops:
I haven't booked a test drive in the 405 , just in case I feel deflated getting back in the Golden Girl. The other side being yes I can afford a newer version, but they won't be much newer than the Golden Girl was when I bought her, and look how much I've put into her . I don't want to step back into the dance, just to find myself doing the same steps I was 4yrs ago. Hence, questioning later l322 and 405 reliability. A 4 -6yr old veh is still a 4-6 yr old veh. Whereas the Golden Girl might be old but she's been well looked after for the last 8yrs and seems to have been treated well before I got her.
This Land Rover's fault. If their vehs werent so full of 'character' , there would be no fear of trading up!!

Yes, I'd hang back on test driving for the moment, even though I've never been in one I just know it's going to be the danglies.

I'm quite averse to NVH and I've always thought, with the 322, that it can only improve with the next gen, and whilst I'm loathe to admit it, Datatek is correct about the leather being too hard. I'm sure the 405 looks softer, therefore it is:D

When I had a minor prang in my 322 I got a spanking new 2013 X3 MSport to pootle around in for a month, and whilst I thought it was garbage (apart from the nice auto gear selector) it was like going back decades when my 322 was returned to me, not so much in a bad way as it was still a vastly better car than the X3 but the steering wheel felt as big as a bus's for a day or two.

Did anyone call you a lucky biach yet?;)

I think they are waiting for when and if I change. Which given my track record , could be next year :D

I've not heard any horror stories from the 405, if i had the cash i would be getting the 5.0 SC L405 or dare I say the new shape sport with the same engine.
Go have a play in a few, i think you would be looking at £20k for a nice 2012 L322 before any discount you have coming your way but If i could afford it I'd upgrade to the L405 and i would imagine a lot of the electronics have been carried over along with most of the engine and transmission.

@gold rover

hi

found this the other week concerning recalls and reviews of various vehicles , this is the one concerning the 405

don’t know if it’s of any use to u or already seen it :D

happy hunting and they do indeed look extremely nice

Thanks for that. Every little helps, when weighing up the options

I prefer the drive of the older L322 TDV8 to the L405.To me the 405 just doesn't seem at all special.
In terms of reliabilty, all the normal EGR faults, turbo's and usual common rail issues. I can't remember which it is, but either the 3.6 or 4.4 has a modded turbo drain pipe which helps turbo life.

Try an L494 sport, it is a lovely drive !
I've always traded up , so not sure I'm ready to step down to a sport of any kind. :p;) Apart from which I have been in the sport and find it looks and feels more like a the other 'not a Range Rover ' models, than the Range Rover. If it came to changing down I would prefer the Velar, although it brings the same problems as the sport, including head, shoulder and leg room.
You could just buy an SQ7 or an RS7 but that would just be boring having to spend your left over money on food, fine wine N ting ;)
Tut, I just said I was not ready to trade down ;) Although being serious they also bring the leg room issue. I am quite picky about driving position and find with a lot of the alternatives my leg brushes against the steering wheel, when moving from accelerator to brake, and it annoys the hell out of me.
N if I ever need money for ting, then I be givin up ting , innit.

hiya

i sometimes wonder if the Jaguar F pace is very much like the sport , seen a lot of D4 owners go over to them, alas adore the shape and size of the larger FFRR and D4s , prefer the higher seating position

something i can’t stand in later models are those rotary gear selectors , Yuck , instead of the proper gear levers
