Hi folks,

Managed to get my hands on a brand new 4.2 short block. It's been sitting up for about 3 years. Protective wax still on it. I'm planning on building it up and running in my def 90. My question is. Do I need to take big end caps off con rods and lub with oil, is their anything else I need to do for prepping the block to run due to lying up for so long. Thanks guys.

Thanks James. Money was running away on the 4.6 as I would have had to buy off the shelf. Got the 4.2 for a third of the price. Should I throw some oil in the back of the pistons.

if no surface rust then all will be fine, though you need to remove any protective coatings before use..

oil will not hurt it..plenty lub is good, it will burn excess off once fired up..

As soon as i degrease and clean engine parts. I spray wd40 on them as soon as they are dry, just to help protect them from corrosion.

to remove protective coating any solvent..thinners, petrol etc..but then COAT in engine oil ..ie liners , bearings etc...ie all internal engine parts want to be covered in oil..

it wont hurt it at all..but be warned ..it wont keep rust away for long..ie if heads off oiled liners will rust if exposed to any moisture for any time..wd40 is crap..that will allow rust within a day if damp!!
not a problem if in heated garage, but if outside in non heated damp garage expect the worst...so leave protective crap on untill engine ready to be put together...
