So, a few weeks ago I replaced the rad on my 110 form the knackered one to a nice shiny new rad which apparently runs 15% cooler than a standard rad, it always took about 5-10 miles on the motorway to heat up anyway but now the only way I can get it up to temp (middle of the gauge) is to really hammer it and once I come off the motorway again it just cools back down to about a quarter above cold........would a new thermostat be a good idea or is it something else?

Here's the new rad I ordered: LAND ROVER DISCOVERY DEFENDER 300 TDI RADIATOR BTP2275 | eBay

id think thermostat needs replacing ,you dont need extra cooling than std rad just a good rad ,but if thermostat is working it should reach temp at the same time

Yeah, was tempted in by the extra cooling as I do a lot of boat towing and heavy hauling of gear........ new stat arrived today, just been reading horror stories of temp senders and crap like that and thought i'd ask the question, cheers

pretty cool running engine anyway, mine barely gets warm even towing up hills. don't think you need the extra cooling from the new rad

The thermostat has probably been a bit dicky for ages but with the rad in that condition it wasn't so noticeable as it wouldn't have been cooling as effectively as it should.
