Does anyone know of a good make of water pump?
They all seem to have the same problem, namely the shaft bearing/bush.
Over the years I've fitted all sorts of different makes and grades both OE and aftermarket, but they all seem to have a fairly short lifespan, couple of years, then they start to squeak, or even just straight forward fail.
Am I doomed to being raped by the main dealer to obtain a genuine part.

Quinton Hazell used to be OK, they may not be now.

Out of interest, do you tighten the fanbelt using a six foot scaffold tube?
 
Serpentine belt on those? My V8 D2 had that, and it worked quite well.

The reason I asked is that I have seen some stupid tight fanbelts over the years, which has a detrimental effect on water pump and alternator bearings.
No scaffolding was harmed.
Tensioner is new(ish)
Belt is correct one - there are 2 lengths, for no apparent reason than ****s and giggles
Just seems that the quality of parts in general is going downhill.

Fair enough. To be honest, I had forgotten that 300 Tdi have a serpentine belt, not a V belt like 200s.
 
I thought I had read somewhere that the difference was due to different size alternator pulleys. I thought the later alternator had a smaller pulley so spins faster and more energy output - but this is based on me trying to remember what I read when I ordered mine about three years ago!
That’s a sneaky modification then.

That is correct, Iirc the later 300 had a 100 amp alternator so had the smaller pulley.
