I seem to have blown my turbo. A quick visit to my local indy confirmed it. Can anyone suggest a good supplier for a replacement? My local mechanic suggested NKK turbos but their website no longer exists. I need to have it couriered to Malta.

I Know of somebody who had good service from London turbos, they are on the bay pf flea and they have a website.

Before you buy 'just' a cartridge make sure you can get the old one out leaving the body intact. I was going to do this with mine, but it was pretty badly coked up and simply wouldn't separate... ;)

Damn that sounds scary! I'm going to try to take mine apart this evening. Incidentally, how does one go about that? I can see that there are 4 bolts on the exhaust side (I'm going to heat them up) but that's all I can see. How is the intake side dismantled?
 
Bi have seen a few youtube vids from companies that make the cartridges that they have done as how tos. May ne worth a search.

A quick search revealed a 2013 post. There's a large circlip apparently. I'll see to it once home. Getting the 4 bolts off is going to be a bit of a headache. There's enough room for a ring spanner on one of the bolts and that came undone without too much trouble. The rest can only be undone using open jaws and I think the spanner's jaws started to open up a little bit (even though it's a good quality spanner). There are some fins in the way. I need to find a way to snap them off (the cartridge is scrap anyway)
 
I managed to get the large circlip off using normal sized circlip pliers but I needed to slip some foot long tube over the handles to increase the force.
Tool abuse I know but it worked.
A friend to help ease the clip out with a screwdriver (more tool abuse)would be useful.

The nuts are a bit of a ball-ache. It may be easier to remove the manifold and work at them on the bench. You can see a few photos of removing the circlip on my post about clocking the turbo. It's a 200tdi, but the turbos are similar.
 
It has to be said ... After I'd sourced a replacement turbo ... that I realised the cartridges were exactly the parts I'd already taken apart, and that the impellor and compressor vanes didn't need separating. I'd been trying to replace the bearings etc and had basically gone too far. Looking back, and thinking about it, I'd say what I first said in this thread isn't really applicable if you buy a full turbo cartridge, just be careful taking apart the snap ring/circlip, or buy a new one first!
 
Thanks a real lot for your tips. I'll take a few pictures as I go along. I've got a few days to kill until the cartridge arrives and I'll upload them (if I find a way) :)
 
I've got two or three manifolds with duff turbos on Sat in the shed which I keep meaning to take one apart and have a go at swapping the cartridge but wouldn't it need balancing afterwards?

No, the cartridge has the turbo inside it, already balanced on it's own bearing set, or oilbushes. All it needs doing is bolt on .. ;)

Yes,

The Centre Hub Rotating Assembly (CHRA) is the bit that does the business, this is supplied balanced and set up, all you would need to do is attached the intake snail and the exhaust snail to the impellor and turbine respectively.
