I am replacing the 300tdi engine in my Defender. The new engine is out of a Disco and there is one or two things worrying me. Firstly fitting the mounting bracket for the air filter box. This involves removing two head bolts to fit. I am concerned about the head when the two bolts are removed. Secondly, this is the first time I have had an engine out of a Defender, anything I should look out for or any hints or tips to make the job a bit easier.

I have seen some conversions where they use the disco air filter, or position the filter in the same place as (i think) the 200 has it.

I find the filter assembly a pain on my (factory) 300tdi defender.

Fit the Defender air filter housing. Remove the head bolts and torque up as necessary. I have done it a few times and head no problems. The last time I did it on my 90 was in June 2003 and I have covered 110,000 miles since then without removing the head.

Slightly OT but is that 110,000 miles just in Malta? If so you must have driven on every road in the country quite a few times!!!!

Approx 95% of it yes! I have been to Sicily 5 times with it and covered approx 800 miles each trip. The rest is on home ground :) During the first three years I covered 1000 miles a month, that went down to 10,000 miles a year for the subsequent 7 years or so and for the past 4-5 years I have averaged 8000 a year.
