In the process of putting a '98 disco 300 in me '87 90, ordered a few conversion bits from Steve Parker - would recommend highly, good website, delivered quickly and fantastic quality -, got a temp sender as I knew that the disco sender will make my gauge read incorrectly, but what has been delivered has the wrong thread, it is tapered and quite a fine pitch whereas I have a parralel thread and quite a course pitch in me engine

The only senders I can find on ebay with the course parralel thread have the disco plug in the top, and as far as i'm aware it wont be accurate with my gauge

Can anyone help me, all replies muchly appreciated

Could you not adapt the sender from your original engine to the Tdi head, that way you know it's compatible with your gauge.
 
Old engine's already gone, it was the '2.5NA free to a good home'

If theres no solution from land rover bits I'll just get a good quality universal gauge and sender and make it fit in the head, but I would have thought something would be compatible
 
This is from memory -

There's two senders, with the same thread. One has a black plastic ring, and one has a green - theyre both OEM landrover bits, and both, so far as im aware, fit in the 300.

Your disco 300 will have, IIRC, the green one (really, this is just from memory, but you get the gist anyhow?) and you need to swap this for the black one.

...but then you need the correct gauge to go with it. I dont think a 200tdi defender one will even do (although, again, check the details) - you need the AMRwhateverthenumbersare that matches the 300tdi defender sender (which, again, should screw into your housing fine)

I had the same issue with the hs2.8 that's in my 101. It was fitted with one type of sender, and another type of (defender 'style' but not correct part number) gauge. I just purchased the gauge and sender to replace them both (not that ive gotten arround to it yet)

If youre really stuck, ill have the numbers written down somewhere, but im sure theyre on the web.

For now, I have fitted a variable resistor inline with the sender, and with the aid of a laser temperature reader (Aldi's finest!), adjusted the pot of the resistor to read somewhere abouts right.
Cheapest fix until I can find out what sender I also need for a Disco 300 in a 1989 Defender 90.
On the subject though, I am in the process of installing a float switch in the header tank to act as 'total coolant loss' alarm. Loads of info out there regarding damage due to loss of coolant on an engine with a water pump so high on an engine.

Hi Andy, so you couldn't find a sendor to suit either, does your sender have the course thread, or the tapered thread?

Julian - I would have said it was about 5/8 size without going and measuring it, and about 18 tpi too

I'll put up a couple of pictures tomorrow

Never removed the sender to be honest. Just have the resisitor between the sender plug and the sender. On engine start up from cold, the needle is on the lower edge of the white on the gauge. Would be nice to have a gauge with actual numbers on, but I'm too tight to buy one. Would prefer to look into completing my coolant low level alarm, and wiring up the radiator fan for now.
I have ordered one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/152119135727?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT which I am planning on trying out as a controller for the electric radiator fan I have fitted. I like the fact it has a digital display on it also. If it looks suitable, will look for a slightly more 'reliable' one (ie for £1.55, I am NOT expecting perfection ha ha). The thermocouple will be 'attached' to one of the hoses or cylinder block, which will in turn bring in a relay once it gets up to my temperature alarm setpoint..
Sorry for not answering your what sender to use question, but I have also been trawling the net after a definitive answer, as dont want to simply keep on buying and trying! (Hence fitting a simple inline resistor (actually, that means that mine must have been registering too HIGH then if it is of any help???)).

So old and new, I now understand the disco 300 senders should be like I've got, was wondering if any other lr engines used the same sender fitment and would work my gauge sensibly

Winchman I do like the look of them watchdog things, much prefer to have a number rather than a needle halfway between a white section and a faded red section

my 300 sender thread is i bit bigger diameter than m12 x 17.5, similar looking pitch

but smaller than 1/2 x 20 and slighty different pitch, die would screw onto sender loose a couple threads and stop
 
Ok solved that problem, new question, just out of interest really, what is the thing in the top of the head that i thought was the temp sender for the gauge?

The engine had EGR, could it be an input for that?
