I've noticed the hazard flashers switch on after going over rough ground or a large bump and can't be switched off until the engine is stopped. I'm wondering if this is a fault or some built in safety device, is it adjustable to be less sensitive I wonder. Thank you.
 
Don't some vehicles automatically switch on hazards when it registers its been in an accident, along with tripping the fuel cut off?
Related to that maybe?
 
mine did the same for many years till it wore out

while doing 60 on the road you just need to switch off while still driving and then on again a second later and it clears till the next time
no need to even take it out of gear

It should only be an issue when the vehicle has a very hard knock or bump as in an accident, there’s inertia switch which will signal the doors to unlock, if locked, and also set the hazards flashing.
To cancel, is by switching off the ignition switch and then back on… which you have already found.
But Inertia sensors can go over sensitive in time, if this issue keeps happening.

Don’t worry about the crash sensor fuel supply cut off, only the petrol D1s have that additional inertia switch.

it’s a printed circuit board mounted component which is factory built for particular inertia spec for its application, and part of the vehicles security ECU PCB. It can’t be adjusted and it is a safety feature.
