Legsy!

Hi there, I've had a look through the old threads and couldn't find much advice on this, so here goes..

I'm having real trouble removing the old front crankshaft oil seal from my 1996 Discovery 300Tdi!

Note that I am not referring to the crankshaft O-ring, but to the seal shown in the image below, which sits behind the crankshaft gear.

The old seal is stuck in there solid! Everytime I try to remove it with seal picks, or small screwdrivers, it begins to break up. I've even pulled the steel spring from it using seal picks and the seal has remained stubbornly in place..

Is this a common problem? Nobody else really seems to have any trouble removing these seals judging by previous threads on the forum..

Any help or advice much appreciated, this is doing my head in and the seal is getting pretty chewed up now!

Use 2 self tapping screws into it and use 2 pry bars to remove it. be careful, rocking back and forth

I used a bit of 1/2" steel strip with a small hook bent into the end, stuff it behind the seal ring, twist and out it popped.

Well mine's being a royal PITA.

I tried prying the little fecker out using various means, had no luck. Destroyed a snap-on seal pick in the process an' all.. Ah well!

I tried drilling small holes (2mm) and screwing self tappers in, no luck. It began to bend the metal in the seal, before totally giving up. I tried it again 90 degrees from the previous holes and the screws just tore through the seal.

This thing is really stuck in there, I can't help but feel it has been put in using sillicon sealant or something. Has anyone else had this much bother getting one of these out?

I think I might have to remove the rear timing case it sits in and press the seal out in the workshop, but that means removing the sump and wasting perfectly good oil.

I wish I could just take it into a garage at this point, but obviously that's not an option minus a timing belt and fuel injection pump..
