I have a 96 auto discovery edc model 300tdi

Just changed the engine it runs fine for 5 minutes then runs out of fuel and cuts out however if I undo the bleed nipple on the filter housing it will run fine forever this is not ideal
I've bled the lift pump by undoing the banjo bolt on the return line at the back of the lift pump
Can't get my head around why this is happening as the filter has no return on that goes to the tank
There is bubbles constantly being blown out the bleed screw on the filter

Any ideas??
 
The lift pump seems to be working fine by hand it worked fine in the other car why wouldnt it work now ?

Ive bled it and bled it it seems to be building air presure in the filter it hisses when you let the bleed screw off

Ive changed the injectors and pipes Ive tightened all the banjo bolts

if the timing is ever so slightly out could the exhaust gasses be pushed up through the injectors and the pump the wrong way?????

Ive had the timing cover off 3 times now And am tearing my hair out
 
run the ip directly from a bottle of diesel hung under the bonnet, so eliminating the fuel system, if it runs ok the problem is in the fuel supply, if it fails again its the ip onwards.

When you take the top off of the filter is the level 'down'?

If it is then your lift pump is at fault ... :eek:
 
Might be an idea to look at the fuel pipe coming out of the top of the fuel tank,they often rust through allowing air to get sucked in.
 
Thank you all for your replys its sorted now running sweet again

I got a lift pump from the scrappy but took the old one off in comparison the one on my engine was like new so I tested them both in a pot of deisel the one from the scrappy diddnt work mine pumped a litre in 8 squirts

I then took my pot of diesel and ran the engine from that by sticking the pipe from the front of the injector pump in the diesel it ran great

So that narrowed it down to it sucking air somewhere along the pipe from the tank I found a pinhole where it had been rubbing I assume the little rubbed spot had been stretched during changing the engine and the hole appeared

My faith has been restored in landrovers I head over heels in love again I just need to find a hill to climb
