My JAP import 300 tdi auto occasionally hesitates but strangely when in lock-up top only. It stutters then clears and run absolutely fine otherwise. Not sure if it's related but it happened after having the car jet washed so I wonder if water has got somewhere it shouldn't. It has a Synergy Ron box fitted but that appears dry and the wiring is all good. Don't understand why only in lock-up or could it be of course the gearbox giving that hesitant feeling? Any ideas appreciated.

I haven't disconnected the box as it's been on for some time (over 2 years) and in conjunction with other mods makes a huge difference to the performance.

Yes but it can quickly tell you if its a box or car problem so narrowing your search.
I had a 97 EDC auto and the throttle was like a switch press and wait! then I bought a box which was good, then I went to see Mr Fearn initially it didnt seem much better but once on my regular routes I could tell it was pretty damned good.
The td5 I bought to replace it was actually slower:D

Thanks for the info. I have just completed a 360 mile round trip and it appears to have now stopped hesitating in lock-up so I assume it was related to having water in the splicing of the wiring?? I am going to redo the wiring as it's not the greatest job by previous owner.
But strangely the tacho now has a mind of it's own and the needle is very erratic especially when over 2000 revs, so I presume this is related, so need to see where the feed is to the tacho.
By the way I have driven several 300tdi's and a TD5 and would say that mine drives better and feels more powerful than any of the others, I reckon it's about 4 seconds quicker to 60 mph which is a massive improvement.

Who's this Mr Fearn and what does he do?

Jeremy Fearn Im not sure if hes still trading but is a whizz at tuning, but wasnt cheap, ecu rechip big intercooler was 800 quid a good few years ago.
Bet he hasnt seen a 300 edc for a good while

Just looked yes still going, http://www.jeremyjfearn.co.uk/index.htm
Looked closer maybe not as site dated 2005!

Thanks for that, probably way out of my price range anyway. Be good to find a bit more performance for not too much money but never mind. Thanks anyway.

The cheap plug in boxes are more than good enough, again Im not sure if you can still get them for the edc models?

Ok thanks, I’ll give it some thought, you probably worked out already it’s not something that I know much about, would you have any recommendations or advice?

I keep meaning to give the 'evry mod' a try on my EDC. I'm going to fit an EGT gauge first though to be safe but it's worth trying for the cost of a simple resistor and a switch. Lots of info on youtube and google for the mod.
