Hi, done a lot of head scratching and searching and hoping to get a 2nd opinion before I buy a new head.
I recently bought a P-reg 300tdi with an overheating problem for cheap. it's been parked up for the last 6 months, so I got it home, couldn't get it started so I proceeded to change the head gasket after seeing a little oil floating in the water.
Cleaned the head and block up as good as possible after removing the old gasket, measured for any warping across all the angles with a metal ruler which seemed ok. Noticed 2 cracks by the 2nd and 3rd glow plug holes following the line of the glow plugs but chose to ignore these following advice in several other posts.
Put it all back together, torqued it down correctly in 4 steps, filled up the coolant and got the engine running again which runs fine.
Now comes the bad bit, the coolant system is pressurizing to the extent I cannot squeeze the water hoses the moment I turn the engine on. I've not let it run for more than a few minutes and I've tried numerous times draining the system and filling it back up with all the bungs out/in in the right order. If I leave the cap off I see what appears to be smoke, and if I put my ear to the coolant filler hole, I hear a chug chug chug chug.
Took the rocker cover off today to put another 20 degrees in the head bolts to see if that made a difference and noticed water/oil foam in the roof of the rocker cover, but not in huge quantities.
Question is, does it sound like the head might be cracked?
Or is there some other place I should be looking?
I was going for the cheaper option hence just a new gasket/bolts, I didn't want to skim the head nor pressure test it due to the cracks around the glow plug holes.
if it is the head, is anyone selling a good one?
