Hey,

Does anyone have a image of their alternator and the cables?

Tldr i can't find any voltage back to my battery to charge it, should there be 2 main positive cables going there? Currently I just have one that goes across the engine and behind the dash.

Thanks in advance

Nope, one cable goes to you battery or starter motor an from there to the battery (the heavy one), the other goes to you dash charging light. .
The (i think “w”) is free… can be used as input for a tachometer..
If you bulb “charging control light” in you dashboard is not burning when you put on you contact .. check the bulb.

If the engine is running and the light in the dash is not burning you should have on both side +12 volt ( use the chassis as ground to confirm)

P.s.

When you put your contact “ON” you should have on one wire (the thin one) a little less than +12 volt, the rotor and the dashboard charging light are in serie.
When the rotor has a magnetic field after the engine is started it will be 12 volt (13,6v up to 14.8v I think)

yeah this is something i'm going to check tonight, but no idea about my loom type, i have a 200tdi loom on a 300tdi i think

200 or 300 tdi, does not matter, the bulb on the dashboard is the same, just like the wires.
It is just straight forward, turn on your contact just before your start and the light on the dashboard should burn.

 I can send you some (flower) bulb's. I am living between them all year round...

Okay, what model defender do you have? One without a ECU, or just like me a Frankenstijn mobiel?

This is a wiring diagram from a early 1986 Ninety.
In the right corner is the alternator with a (heavy) Brown wire to the starter solenoid (Also the +12V from the battery)
There is a Yellow/Brown wire to the (Dashboard) Ignition warning light (BULB , sorry ).
The other side of the Warning light (grey) wire is going to the fusebox and is also +12Volt AFTER the ignition (and starter) switch is turned on.

B+ goes to battery
D+ warning light
W as said rev counter (probably not used)

tldr i've no brown/yellow wire, i'll have to go hunting for that one.. i've got the diagrams and it goes to a diode.. but does anyone have a rough location of where i would find it / connectors on 300tdi defender loom

Yeah just I don't have any wires coming from the diode in the bulkhead going to the alternator for D+, is D+ required to energise the alternator on a 300tdi?

The trick is that D+ is helping to generate a magnetic field in the genarator, once it is generated the help in no longer needed.
Therefore a little bulb (resistor) or a diode (with resistor) is used.
Once the generator is running (with its own magnetic field) you can disconnect D+ en the magnetic field stays in tact.

You can test it by using a wire from the battery positive with one side connected to a test light (brake light or something like that) and the other side of the light connected to the D+..

Connect also the B+ to the battery +12v and your battery should be charging…

Yeah I need a picture of where the loom should come out, I have the round connector plugs so need someone with a picture hopefully so i can work out where it is
