Hi guys, I am just changing the front cover on a 300 tdi so although the timing belt has only done 27K km it is over 6 years old so i am changing it.. Im struggling to find the marker on the flywheel, the woodruff key on the front of the crank is at 5 to 12 instead of 12 o clock when the cam is lined up and the pin is in the pump. I have the locking pins, but cant see what the flywheel pin should locate into. I have an auto g/box. Should the woodruff key be at the top. The engine does smoke a bit on excelleration, it is a bit harsh sounding and although it runs ok it is not keen on pulling an old 2 berth caravan. any comments regarding the position of the woodruff key please. I have changed it before, but have had a mini stroke since then & cant remember bugger all since, Thanks.

Have you got the later crankshaft pulley? The early ones don't have a flange to stop the belt moving forward, it ends up rubbing a grove in the timing cover.
