Was towin a car trailer with car on and its broke,

I was coasting down a long shallow down hill stretch of road and developed a tapping / blowing noise but still ran, if I dipped the clutch the engine idled and noise went,

Set off on to the roundabout at the Bottom (uphill) and it just coughed and coughed and came to a stop, right In the middle if the roundabout,

Tried to start it and nothing just cranked over, quick thinking of my mate said crank it over in gear and drive it on the starter off the roundabout so we did,

Had a look at it,

timing belt has not gone,

Carnt feel it blowing from the rear of the head

If you crank it over there's thick grey smoke from the exshaust,

Looked in the inlet and there's abit of oil but no more than normal.

Any idea

Well turns out my timing case was full of mud and water causing the tensioner to rust and collapse and the timing to slip.

It's smashed all beside 2 rockers so I'm gessing it's bent all the push rods,

How can I double check the timing isn't out, I have the pump timing hole, and a mark on the cam pulley, and the timing mark off the flywheel ( woodrup key facing up)

But how do I know that the crank isn't 1 turn out if it can be or is this not possible?

I have wading plugs and breathers of gearbox and crank case, but muddy water has got in from off roading, and cause I haven't removed the pug after the pay and play waters bin sat in there for a while, ( my fault I know) anyhow here's some pictures.

what a f--king mess , crank cant be one turn out until you connect it to cam by belt the same with the pump and cam

oooops reckon a lot of readers are out checking drain plugs tomorrow....
Hope ya get it sorted without too much more hassle

thats right , its only once belt is on then turning over twice beccomes necessary to get cam and pump right as they run 1/2 crank speed

So, time it up, belt on turn it over twice and recheck, I'm gessing is the crank is out it will hit at tdc? And wind turn over by hand.
