Hi
Does anybody know if a shorter ribbed Aux,drive belt can be used on the 300 TDI ?
I will be obmitting the fan and pulley if possible as using elec fan , i was thinking if possible to fit a shorter belt ?
anybody know if this is possible and what belt they used ?
Many Thanks

Surely you just remove the fan and do not need to change the belt at all? There is no benefit in removing the pulley from the belt run and mans that you will be using no standard belt lengths making finding spares more difficult.
I may be wrong as I am used to a 200tdi rather than a 300tdi but is the viscous fan not mounted on the water pump pulley? If so then omitting this pulley means the water pump has no drive.

300 has the water pump really high, think disco 200tdi alternator high, so fan runs on a seperate dedicated pulley.

Learn something new everyday, however if the fan is removed surely there is still no benefit to omitting the idle pulley that would be used to drive it and using a shortened belt.

Agreed, just remove the viscous fan and leave the belt standard.

As you can see from the photo, the fan pully is the one on the LH side (looking from the front).
Lets just assume for one minute that you did remove the pully and found a belt to fit, it would then be running diagonally across the front of the block and running very close to the PAS pump pully. I would also say that the tensioner would be having absolutely no effect whatsoever.

Leave as standard.

That is also why the 300 cooks their heads when the coolant gets even a little low as the pump runs dry.

I also found the 300 is more sensitve to temperature on the air con models and less tolerant to abuse than the 200.
