just bought a 1994 300 TDI 90, the guy said the previous owner to him put a boost pin into the engine to boost performance.
When i am driving normally there is no smoke, but on first start up and when i first start to accelerate when moving off or changing gear i get a big black puff of smoke, is this likley to be somthing simple or a multitude of different possible problems?

The first start black smoke is normal, it is an auto fuel boost to assist starting. A big puff each time you accelerate could be the fuelling is turned up tad too much. Not a problem as such but a waste of fuel. Others more familiar with the system can advise.

Has it got a bigger intercooler or just the boost pin, you can adjust the pump where the boost pin
is fitted. On top of the pump there a cap with 4 screws & a fuel union. remove them & under that
is a diagram with the pin on it.
Under that is a cog you can turn either way to adjust the fuelling.
Mark the cog & casing with a sharpie or tippex at 12 o clock
To the RHS there are 2 little clips under the cog open these & turn it a quarter turn back & see if its
better or worse for smoke. If worse take it a quarter turn the other way.
Tis trial an error for these.

When ive bought any 200 or 300 tdi they are always turned up feckn like puff the magic dragon lol

Fit a standard pin, 5 minutes work.

It’s started to use oil too, could it be the head gasket?

Some engines like to have the oil 1/2 way between min and max, fill them to max and pretty quick they are down to 1/2 way and stay there for ages.
