hi looking for info on 3 link front for my 73 rangie,has any one done this yet or no what plains work,my truck runs 3"body lift and 4"spring lift now the springs have settled,just looking for more artic .rear has no probs with adjustable hd heim joint trailing arms and long travel shocks,or would it be better to drop the 3 link and move the rear trailing arm mounts forward to be in line with rear output shaft and run longer rear trailing arms with even longer shocks. currently my truck is scoring around 900+ rti

3-linking a front end is not small undertaking. Was fairly popular here about 5 years ago and I even think that QT Services do a kit.

Things to consider first (and the reason they have fallen out of popularity) is do you need all that flex and do you realise what it will handle like on the tarmac? The front end will have lots of body roll.

Also the centre link and it's mounting have to cope with massive compression or tension forces under braking or acceleration. Note that the type of force (compression or tension) depends on how you mount the centre link. Is it above or below the diff.

On an LR the best bet is to have the centre link below the diff. This is mainly to avoid the sump on full compression. The cross member under the flywheel housing is the obvious place to mount the centre link, but you will have to remanufacture one out of 4/5mm wall box section.

Geometry. Make the links as parallel as possible and as close to equal length as possible and get as much vertical seperation as possible at link ends. Parallel and equal length links will reduce castor angle and pinion angle changes as the suspension cycles.

IME you may find that the centre link mount on the axle causes some ground clearance issues and in whatever form the axle end mount for the centre link takes you will find that you will have to remove the centre link to change the front diff.

The long and the short of it is......there are easier ways to get more flex out of the front end of an LR that a 3-link system.

Somethings occurred to me last night....

...check out Outer Limits 4x4 Board :: Index and do a search under the Rover section. Oz based forum so a little more your part of the world (yes I know there is a 5 hours flight between Aus and NZ :) )

You need to look out for a chap called MogRover. He has done lots of suspension mods in his time including 3-link...IIRC
 
thanks just signed up on there forum.and thanks for you help.will post up if get it done ,might do it to my bobtail 1st after i have extended rear trailing arms by 15" and see if it needs 3 link. i think ive seen mogrovers truck it runs unimog diffs
