Just to update on my 3 amigo's problems, yesterday it suddenly clicked that I've checked all the sensors, removed every plug, fuse and relay I could find that was remotely connected to these systems, replaced the brake light switch all to no avail. So yesterday after washing the cars I decided to check the oil and water an them all, and while checking the Freelander oil and water it was staring me in the face, the BLOODY brake fluid reservoir the only thing I hadn't touched, so remove plug and replace check lights and they go out. Checked again twice this morning and hey presto they still go out as intended. So thanks everyone for your suggestions, they were appreciated.

:):)

Well now, that's interesting.

What you are saying is that the Brake Fluid Sensor or it's plug-in - if not sending a correct signal will also switch off the ABS system and illuminate the 3 Amigos - even without illuminating the Low Fluid light.

I've been watching your Intermittant Thread, because I have had a similar issue over the last 2 years.

Every so often my 3 lights come on. It seems entirely random - occassionaly when braking - more often when driving without touching the brakes - such as at 70 on the Motorway or even 30 on a town road.
It maybe occurs 2 or 3 times a week and resets when I turn the ignition off and turn it back on.
I was beginning to think it was an internal fault on a sensor or a broken reluctor ring.

What makes this interesting is, it started after I had stopped up once, engine running and my foot on the brake pedal for a considerable time.
So, I thought Brake Switch and changed it - no difference.
This was right after an Independant Service where I subsequently noticed they had broken the mount for the Brake Fluid Level Sensor - easily done removing or refitting the engine cover on a TD4.
The Mechanic (?) had cable tied the sensor plug-in back onto the reservoir, and I have knocked it a couple of times myself removing that cover.

I will go investigate.

Sorry to be a doubter but it's hard to understand how a simple level switch would do this. Why, if fluid level is low, would you need to bring on so many different warning lights, wouldn't the red brake warning be enough?
In any case simply bridging the plug contacts should be enough to eliminate the level switch

The brake fluid level was correct, so it wasn't a level issue I can only assume that the wiring to the level indicator is somehow connected to the 3 amigo's circuit. All I do know is that after removing, spraying with contact cleaner and replacing the plug the light's have now started to work as intended, whether it's a coincidence or not I can't say, just happy that they appear to work normally.

I'm happy for you anorl. Just don't understand it. :D

The level switch is earthed on one side and the power feed to it is from the ABS CCU, so maybe there is a check circuit function like the Brake Light Switch.

I may be straw clutching - but it might not be a simple on/off swtch but a measure of changing resistance across the switch - so if it shows no loss at all to earth ie. disconnected - then a fault may be indicated.

Hi Folks,

I have a similar issue, which has now become a 'saga' (full details over on landrovernet.com).

I have a 2002 Freelander TD4 auto, I've had fault codes for the abs modulator and both front sensors - now replaced. I've also replaced the brake light switch, front brake discs, pads, caliper pistons and seals!

I now have no fault codes present but the intermittent issue persists.
I was about to replace the reluctor rings, which look ok, as my next attempt to solve this.

I was glad I found this thread by jimbo2107 and the input from Mark2 and Chaser.

My brake fluid sensor plug-in has also been broken and repaired by tape, prior to me buying the car. I'm going to have a look at this today.
Many Thanks for posting this suggestion, I have never heard of this as a cure before now.

Please update should they return jimbo?

I'll try to link my thread, but may not be able to, as I just joined Landyzone this morning..

Front abs sensor, 2002 TD4, removal advice please :)

It seems to have worked (the link that is)..

Disconnected and cleaned mine today, it didn't work for me - Pity.

As I said yesterday I don't know if it was coincidence or if another problem had cleared itself but fingers crossed they are off and were off when I went out in it this morning so just hoping it's permanant.

Had the chance this afternoon to plug into a T4 test rig, and there was nothing showing or stored, so whatever caused the problem whether it was something to do with the brake fluid level indicator I just don't know.
The lights have flashed a couple of times and gone off again without returning after a restart, but today I have just done several short trips including some rough ground and they are still off.:)

Jimbo - Having suffered a genuine low fluid warning moment - due to garage not tightening a rear bleed nipple fully , only the brake indicator came on, not any others  This was on a later ABS sensor type td4 although there could be a difference on the earlier setup? A faulty brake light switch was the cause of our amigo's. Glad it's looking sorted for you though.

Well it didn't make any difference for me,

Cleaned up and made sure the sensor connection was good - no shorts or breaks.

Lights still came on twice in the last few days.
They will go off if I turn off the ignition and turn it back on.
They will stay off for 2 hours, 2 days or even 2 weeks

Then, suddenly they wll come on when I'm tootling along at 60 on a main road, not even touching the brakes. Reset by turning off and on again.

The latest super doopah Brake light switch with the adapter harness made no difference either.

And running a meter over the sensors gets the right Ohm reading everytime.

so,
that's me stumped

You could try taking sensor resistance readings direct from the abs ecu connector. Check the connection is all clean and tight at the same time....

Well just think I've gone someway to a result the amigos surfaced again so I got the chap with the diagnostics in and he says the only fault showing was a longitudinal accelerometer(also know as a G sensor I believe) running out of parameters, he has recalibrated and the faults have now cleared and not came back.

fingers crossed again....

had mine on decided to have diagnosics done drivers front sensor faulty i am wondering if and were you can get an aftermarket one as the genuine landrover is rediculasly priced any ideas (2004 td4)

just failed test 3 amigos again told code (C1032)FRONT RIGHT SPEED SENSOR after changing abs sensor
please what do i do were does anyone reccomend
genuine landrover garage or what

i have a 2002 td4 with the 3 amigos after changing a wheel bearing fault reader said front left sensor so i took apart and new bearing etc and cleaned up the drive and sensor which had grease on it.. can something have fallen off the drive on me i dont have a reluctor ring thingy on drive presume it picks signal off something on the shaft????any one!!

2002 freelander td4 commercial 2.0 ltr

The later ones don't have reluctor rings but have magnets inside the bearing seal to activate the sensors.
You have most likely fitted the earlier bearing intended for a shaft that has a reluctor ring fitted.
