Decided to post a fresh post with my guide and pictures in it. Hopefully admin will sticky it which in turn will help fellow Hippo drivers.

Here's my definitive guide, couple of pictures are from other sites.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Whilst driving to work on Friday, I noticed the Hill Descent Control & Traction Control warning lamps illuminated:

I also realised later in the evening that my brake lights weren’t working either and who knows for how long! Much reading on Landyzone lead me to believe that the brake light switched was stuffed.

After googling Landrover Freelander parts I found I needed the following : -

New Switch Part Number -(XKB500120):

Convertor Harness Part Number -(YMQ503280):

Here’s a picture of the both the switch, and the converter loom (Harness) attached together:

Procedure to replace:

To remove the old one switch, locate behind and above the brake pedal. Once located, rotate clockwise and gently pull to one it clears it should come away. It was then just a matter of removing the old switch by twisting it like that and then withdrawing it from its retaining bracket.

The new switch was then installed by inserting it into the retaining bracket and twisting anti clockwise. The loom was connected up and the ignition turned on. The HDC & TC lights then extinguished after the bulb check.

New Switch

Compare the new switch to the old one! They are substantially different in shape and size.

The new switch also seems more robust than the older one!

Admin please sticky.

great post and something im gonna be doing real soon i think as soon as im sure this is the cause of my three amigos..working intermittently is really annoying

Really great post. I followed your instructions and the lights were gone in my 2006 Freelander 2.5 V6! Never came back.
Thanks.

Hey Peco,

Would you know if this problem also affected earlier Freelanders? Mine is a 1999 XEDI with the 3 lights on the dash but the brake lights are working fine.

Local garage 'guessed' it was ABS sensors but obviously it would make sense for me to try the switch first.

Cheers,
Mikey

:)Well, Had a new brake light switch fitted hopefully to cure my problem of amber lights on dashboard staying on but unfortunately did not cure the problem, if anyone has any other ideas it would be greatly appreciated, anyone know how to get to the ABS sensor?

Mikey,
Did you manage to fix this, if so how? I too have a XEDI with the same lights however my brakes seem to be working..

Cheers

Ordered new light switch and the bugger doesn't appear to fit! It's longer than the original so the lugs won't fit through the bracket even though it's the same part number?!

Plugged it in anyway and the 3 dash lights were still on!

No further forward and a brake light switch to sell on if anyone is after it?

My wife had the dash-light problem but the brake lights still worked however a quick look under the dash showed that the switch had not been turned enough to let it click into position so it was moving slightly every time the peddle was pressed. A quick turn of the switch and all was ok.:D

hi im havin exactly same trouble n the pics have been a great help but in the 5th picture down iv noticed a black thing with a white connector goin into it now i can see the white connector but the little black thing is missing could this be why my 3 amigos are stayin on im new to the site but have found it really interestin n a great help already, would appreciate the help cheers

hi been having same trouble 2days now. great advise thanks going to order part then try to fix myself. but wife wants to take hippo 4x4 garage. im **** at DIY but with this good advise i could do it myself thanks

Brilliant post!!:D
The TC light and Hill Decent light were both on - read your advice, ordered the parts, fitted them - done! Problem solved!! - thank you very much!

My Freelander 53 plate does the same, it happend every so many weeks at a time

I have now found that turning the ignition off for a few seconds, starting up and pulling away slowly and then jamming breaks on clears it.

Will deffo be replacing the switch now though.. nice one..:)

I had the 3 amigo lights on so I sprayed the plunger on the switch with WD 40 and hey presto everything back to normal. NO 3 AMIGOS Magic

My lights came on on Monday so going to change the switch as soon as I order it... Fingers crossed this cure's the problem.

Hi, i own a 2004 freelander 1.8 SE and have had the problem with the TC and HD warning lights coming on for the past 12 months, i've bought a new brake switch, and thanks to this post located the brake switch. I will try to fit it tomorrow as today its raining a bit heavy at the moment.

New switch is fitted but lights are still on...... Booooo  so now off to book it in and pay silly money.

i just had the brake switch problem. A quick spray with carb cleaner then WD40 seems to have solved the stupid dash lights problem. Maybe Ill get a new switch in due course.
