have to now decided to service car, plugs & leads, dizzy cap & rotor etc but which brand names are best and which are to be avoided for example i know some ht leads dont work
many thanks :)

ngk or champs are ok but I have heard that champs have lost qulaity in recent years.

leads only magnecore or genuine ladrover lucas ones, not only lucas as the quality is much worse than landrover lucas ones and certainly no other makes I have problems with all others!

same for dizzy cap and rotor, go to landrover it costs a bit more but worth it much better than only lucas or all other makes.

I went for the magnecore leads in the end as you get a 10 year warrenty which for £105 as against £30-£60 for landrover leads with a 1 year warrenty seems worth it.

the flame traps can be hard to get, keep looking as landrover wants £60 which is ridiculous, they can be found for as little as £15 but most places are out of stock all the time

think will opt for ngk's what are gaps set to for running on lpg also being a bit thick here but what are the flame traps

between the rocker breather to the inlet manifold there is a metal canister (or two depending on model) if they are blocked it will cause you to burn oil or it can cause leaks.

Flame traps will last for years i'm still using the original on the disco and still have a spare that I had for my old RRC so thats around 20 years old, they just need soaking in petrol once a year or when servicing the engine to clean.

depends how smeggy they are, mine looked like tar and I cleaned it well and it did another year but since I changed it my oil consumption has gone way down

At 6000mls replace oil (10w40), oil and air filter thats it with the engine, simple :D
is that semi senthetic and any make every 6000k and while im at it im thinking of maybe flushing and changing coolant is there a technique for this ,then when im all done hopefully she will keep running and stay reliable

changing the coolant is easy, but getting the cylinder block drain taps on each bank undone without breaking them is not :p

Getting at the bottom hose is not that easy with a/c and cooler pipes in the way on my disco and as it's been there for 13 years so must be welded. I just undo the small hose that branches from the bottom hose to the expansion bottle and drain that way. Simple.

I have never see the coolent drain plugs for each block, I know my 3.5 had them but on a 3.9... not that that I would ever go there even if they are fitted.

If you are replacing your antifreeze which is no difficult then go for the red OAT stuff and you won't need to do it again for five years. I went over to it six years ago from the green/yellow Rover antifreeze so I drained the system, refill with plain water run the engine for five mins to circulate and drain again etc three times just because OAT doesn't mix with normal antifreeze.
Still have four years left untill I change it again. Brilliant.

the 3.9 also has drains on each bank, they wont come undone on my 3.9 though.

I went to change the coolant on my 3.5 in the 72 when I got it and was happy to say it had oat in it which I replaced with more oat and also the drain tap came undone with my fingers!!! very rare for a rover v8 let alone a pre 76 engine!
