Hi can anyone help?

Disco developed fault with spider 3 months go after everyone played about with it and I joined this site found the spider prob. This was the last thing they tried as i am a woman neither bloke would listen to the expert advice given here. They did however follow the instructions on how to mend it.

On fixing spider all seemed well but they had damaged vac pipe so taped it up and bought new one. Poor disco seemed to have problems with hills. When under load seemed to struggle.

Asked ex husband to go out in it and try it he refused saying it would be timing as had distributer out. timing checked took another month to do that. Disco struggling worse up hills now . Convinced him to take ride in car he diagnosed that it was missing rather badly.

Another three weeks passes he has now put new plugs in all were black. New leads new distributer cap redex in tank and no improvement whats so ever.

When breakdown man came to me when spider failed he assumed i had run out of fuel and kept putting easy start into air filter to drag fuel through. Has this done damage. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
I doubt the easy start would cause such a problem, that said if it's a 3.9 you'll have an electric pump so applying easy start is not going to make a difference to the fuel delivery!

Your misfire could be down to many things and without seeing the car it's difficult to get to the bottom of the problem.

Is the misfire presesnt while your stationary revving the engine or just under load?
Does it back fire at all?
Do you have or access to a HT (spark) tester?
Cheers
Chris!

Hi no backfire not missing when stationary only when put foot down and put her under load. She is not running hot and also fuel consumption not gone up, but then again not using kick down and nursing her by putting foot down a bit and then letting her freewheel till need power again.

Not got a spark tester but going to try and get her on diagnostic thingy at a garage tomorrow. so will that show it up.

thanks carol

The diagnostic thingy probably won't tell you anything but still worth a try.
My money goes on HT breakdown.
Possibly,
Rotor arm
Distributor cap althought I think you said that it had been replaced.

HT leads or ignition coil, but it's going to be trial and error I'm affraid.
Do you know anyone with another V8 that you can "borrow" bits from to try as that would be the cheapest and easiest way to get to the bottom of it?

The problem you describe sounds very similar to one I had - that turned out to be an iffy ecu; it wasn't reading the air flow meter. Check your air flow meter, there are various threads that tell you how you can do that.

If the air flow meter checks out, have a good look at the connector and make sure there are no loose or damaged wires under the rubber boot that covers the connector plug.

Next thing to maybe have a look at is vac advance on the dizzy; make sure this is working then check/set ignition timing.

If you can get hold of one, try a substitute ECU but be sure to know that it is a good one that works.

Part of the issue is being able to determine if the lack of power/misfire/stumble is ignition or injection related, can be a frustrating journey getting to the bottom of it. Hope that helps ya.

as kev says. I expect timing is out as they had the dizzy in and out and its no always easy to put it back as it should be first go.

does it have lpg? my rangie had a problem with one of the injector plugs where the lpg kit T's into the original loom. this made only 7 injectors work.

Hi Crazychick I read that the distributer cap has been changed was the new one lucas ?.
The v8 engine does not like pattern ignition parts, they can cause all sorts of problems
including missfiring.

Next post i'm going to say i'm a woman! Much more fast replies!!

Saying that, like it's been said. Air flow meter or maybe ignition coil. Air flow meter would likely cause missfire when stationary from my experience. As it's under load and the spark plugs were black i'd lean towards it being and ignition system problem.

Try unplugging the air flow meter and see if that improves or worsens things.

Get the ecu tested but not many have the 14 cux injection tester.
Is the fuel pump feeding the correct fuel pressure
Timing?
Are the cap leads and rotor gen items?
When was the last time it was serviced is it LPG converted?

hey guys i am a new member,
my v8 had the same problem, it Was the HT leads, a new set fixed the problem,
on inspection of the old set nothing found at first till the silicone lead was warm then on dark night tracking could be seen fro various leads.
have you replaced the leads on 'spider ' yet??
