I have a RRC 3.9 V8 in my 90, it has been running fine for the past 3 years since i've had it, but the other day whilst tidying up the engine bay i removed a seemingly pointless wire from the coil +ve terminal from behind the dash that wasn't attached to anything. Now the starter doesn't crank the engine over, everything else works, fuel pump, battery and oil pressure lights etc. but when i turn the ignition to the third position to start it everything, goes dead, dash warning lights go out and the relay with black, black and white and another wire makes a click and thats it. please help this is really frustrating as i have no clue what it could be!

Sorry, but are you really that ****ing stupid?

I should clarify, the black wire wasn't attached to anything, I removed the dash and checked and photographed everything before i removed it. To answer your rather curt reply, Minty, no I'm not that stupid. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Regards

Cheeky fooker I never even spoke to you  I said hello to fanatic.

Back of the Ignition switch looks as it should, everything is okay in that area, its just odd that when i get to the 3rd stage of the ignition for the starter, the relay just clicks and the starter doesn't crank....

so you need a feed from starter to relay/ignition switch, also if you have a ballast system 12v feed to coil on cranking

Ahhh so the seemingly innocuous wire from the coil +ve could have been 'loosely' connected to a 12v switched source behind the dash? so if i reattach a switched 12v source to the coil +ve it may come back to life?

Depends if it runs a ballasted system, if it does it over volts coil on cranking for better spark.

As soon as starter is released the system runs through resister with a coil rated at less than 12 volts.
