Hi there, have just fitted v8 into my 90 and not ever have owned a v8 have a couple of questions:

1) the v8 seems to get very hot very quick I'm currently using the old diesel rad with 2 8 inch fans do I need to use a v8 rad as rrc rad doesn't fit width wise?
2) temp gauge goes to just before red and then sits there is this because it was a diesel temp gauge?
3) what temp should a v8 sit at when normal?
4) does temp sensor need to go to white plug back to ecu first then the dash as I just have the existing wire from dash go to temp sensor on engine?

I guess this will cause rich running if ecu doesn't know engine temp?

1, are the fans coming on?
2, sort of, change sender prc2506
3, mine sits below halfway, but soon gets hot if stopped in traffic
4, no, ecu receives signal from it's own thermistor

I have the older 2.5 19J turbo diesel rad + electric fan and it heats up pretty quickly but holds at normal temp range just below 1/2 IIRC.

you'll probably have to use the correct sender to get the correct reading on the gauge - so fit the one from the previous engine in.

Fans are switched so on all the time do I match the gauge to the rrc sensor then?

Don't have old sensor as engine gone now so I'll just have to either get gauge or sensor but not sure which one?

There is a slight kink in the bottom hose where it doesn't quite fit right could this cause high temp due to poor flow?

Does anyone know the normal running temp in 'c?

Yea everything rad and hose wise gets hot but it's too hot to touch for more than 2 seconds
I've just never had anything run this hot before but with the gauge issues too I don't know if it's running too hot and don't want to do a test run incase I cook it?

I know mines hot when I can't hold the top hose. It's usually hot but you can hold it no probs.

Slam a viscous fan on there? See if that helps? I was really struggling to keep mine cool in these warm ambient temps and that was with 2x 12" fans fitted to a full width v8 rad with he upgrade (4 row)

Viscous fan shrugs it all off, so I'd try that first. If that doesn't sort it then it could be the rad size, or it could actually be a waterpump/thermo issue.

Thanks mr noisy took it round yard for a run and seemed to stay relatively cool as only went just over half but that's with fans on from start when cold I guess won't know until first proper run on the road will change thermostat too I think as looks original

hi people, i am running a 4.0 efi motor but on su s in a 90 hardtop it runs like a dream and cool using std 300tdi rad with viscous fan.

Yeah I reckon it will stay cool on the road of its all in good shape, fit a viscous and it'll be cool all the time!

I just keep grease on my fan nut so it's nice and loose, most of the time it stays on but for particularly deep water crossing I just jump out and unscrew it, I don't use a cowling...

hi again, i forgot to say the temp gauge in the defender dash is not compatable with the sender in the V8 so the gauge goes up to the 120 mark then when the thermostat opens drops to the hundred mark. in real terms its opening at around 88-90 then drops to 80-82. I could put an in line resistor in to make the gauge sit in the right place on the dial but just havnt got around to it and she stays cool even when pulling other make 4x4 s off wet grass, ha ha.
