Im designing / building a rev counter at uni to go on my 1989 land rover 90. Can anyone tell me what the max rpm is set to on a low compression 3.5 V8 (SU carb type, standard engine)?

The other thing Im not sure about is how powerfull is my v8 as some places I read 114bhp and others 134bhp. From what Ive read at various places it seems that I may have a 134bhp variant as its after 1986. Anyone got any knowledge on this?

As far as I know the 134 brake version was fitted with SU carbs, as opposed to Stomberg's. Other forum members may be able to help with engine serial numbers.

134 bhp when new older lucky if you have 100bhp max rpm before power tail off is 5,000 rpm at a push the pistons were only designed to take 6,000 rpm for very short burst before cracking

I'm in the process of reading Des Hammill's book. He seems to indicate that 5000 rpm is the realistic limit for stock parts.

trust me mine revs to 6,000 regular and still wants to go but won't push her past that as with most things every engine is like herby the bug never the 2 same are ever built

kinell, I take mine round to 7k on occaisions, best not then eh:( Rev counter may be out though but it is over 10 to one and has big valve heads so lookin at 6k plus, does 30 odd in first and over 50 in second on an LT85 box.
I think I'll keep her down to 5 now as I need the engin for a project when I put the diesel in:eek:
