I believe you can take the pressure relief valve out. I know you can remove the oil pump completely without draining the oil (been there etc!) but you will most likely need to re-prime the pump. The easiest way I have found for that is to pop the dizzy out and use a short length of threaded steel rod with a slot cut in one end to fit on the pump drive. Stick an electric drill on the other end and spin it up, you'll feel it when the pump is primed.

If the PRV is only sticking slightly you could try starting the engine let it idle, slide under the front with a small hammer and tap the valve then see if the oil warning light goes out. Don't let it run for too long if the oil light stays on.

tad pole oil relief valve as mod but you have classic symptoms of overheated/water ingress and scored plunger.
rather than take distributor out(pump will not self prime) take out oil pressure relief plunger and spring. fill a grease gun with Vaseline or a cake metal icing tool.
Remove king lead, press right into chamber (hole in end) fill, flick starter and pump more in -do several times and refit oil pressure relief assembly.

It really is that easy

Thanks Fantic i think everything is sorted now engine wise. when i re built the engine and tested it there was oil pressurse there but that was with the old oil pressure sender as at the time i was waiting for new coolant tem & oil pressure senders to come. ive then fitted the new oil sender thinking it will be fine ( as you would do from a new item) and a few weeks down the line when i ran the engine the oil light was on. All in all the engine has been stud for around8 months whilst ive re-built my landy and i think that the engine was stud in the doner RRC for a year befor that, and even though fresh oil was put in moisture has got to the engine as now when it runs there is no steam coming out of the breather. I think i new it was just moisture but it shocked me after febuilding the engine to see steam coming from the breather.
Just got to sort the Alternator out and she is off for a MOT
