Hello all

I've just rebuilt my series 3 gearbox. Upon inspection, it had a multitude of issues, not staying in reverse being the main problem.

I'm pleased to say the reverse issue is now solved, all gears select nicely with no crunches or unpleasant noises. My issue is second gear, on overrun it makes a loud chattering noise. Only on overrun, when load applied it stops.

I did replace the bronze bush (single piece item now fitted) as part of the rebuild, the end float on 2nd gear was a little bigger than I'd have liked, about 0.008 (think the max in the book is 0.007) - I decided to chance it. Could 0.001 over the end-float limit really make 2nd gear so noisy?

Unfortunately the landy was a non-runner when I got it, I wasn't able to drive and check the box for issues other than reverse gear.

I expect I'll be taking the box back out one evening this week and revisiting the end-float......or maybe I'll just drive it and wait to see if it gets better ;-)

Thoughts or experiences with chattery 2nd gear on overrun much appreciated.

Happy new year

In the middle of sorting mine [ no reverse ] when I get over the covid. If not jumping out of second on over run doubt it is a end float issue.
