Hi
ive recently rebuilt a defender 200tdi and while trying to start it
the lift pump doesn't seem to be pumping fuel, as far as I can tell its
timed correctly all markes lined up correctly.

ive a feeling the cam shaft is in the wrong position is there any way of checking by sight without stripping the whole lot. im going to have to strip back to timing belt to fix it, can I release the the rocker arm to allow pushrod room once the timing belt tensioner has been loosened to adjust the camshaft

you can remove rocker cover and turn engine over watching valves on no1 inlet should open and close and stop when crank is at tdc both no1 valves should be shut and play in rockers no4 valves both slightly open rockers tight ,if you remove pump plate on front housing pin should fit in pulley slot
 
Thanks crank is at tdc and fuel pump is pinned it the lift pump that's causing me the problem, someone else worked on the engine and ive a feeling things where adjusted or rotated without me knowing, if I remove plate behind lift pump what should the lobe look like
 
crank may be at tdc and pin in but what position is cam in ,correct or 180 degrees out ,lift pump will either work or not undo pipe from it to fliter and see if it pumps on the key ,manual lever often dont work
 
if I crank engine over would I run the risk of bending valves/pushrods,
how do I check to see if cam is correct or out??
never rebuilt an engine before no problem doing any other work
 
Ah ok ive done most of that, Ill try it all again from scratch a lot of stripping to do,
im happy with crank and fuel pump just cam shaft is bugging me, if I lock pump and crank and release timing belt can I rotate camshaft to correct position, the head was removed when everything was pinned

no as engine is pinned at tdc so you would need to wind pistons so they were not to allow room for valves to open then re-pin ,but you only need watch valves/rockers to see if cam is right
