Hi all. I may be coming back to the fold. I have between 5K-6K to
replace the Jeep Cherokee with, and am stuck between getting an Isuzu
Trooper 3.1tdi or a 110. I miss my old 110V8. Would I be right in
thinking that a 200TDI would be better than the older 2.5TD? Bearing
in mind that I regularly tow a 2 ton catering trailer round, would a
200 be alright, or would I honestly be better off with the
Bighorn/Trooper (wrong group for that advice, I know)... For the same
money I'm looking at 1995/6/7 troopers - what sort of year 200TDI 110
would I be looking at - I seem to be seeing 1990-92 110 200's for that
money? I assume that I can't afford a 300, but would it be better?

Would a 200TDI offer reasonable mileage as I'm fed up with the Jeep's
13mpg and the old 110V8 was about the same when towing. I'm a
reasonable driver, towing at <60 with no harsh acceleration etc.

you should get 20-25 towing a big trailer, with a TDi. for that sort of
enterprise, I'd avoid the TD like a thing you really want to avoid, say the
taxman, for example. It'll die.

Firstly, to reply to the initial question. Clearly the budget gets
you into the Tdi window so go for the Tdi over a 2.5D everytime.

As for the trooper... Well yes it'll be newer but its just a car,
Landy's are to be loved. Thats why they've lasted nearly 60 years!

Do you need a 110 or a 90? If you can manage with a 90 I have a very
well looked after 200Tdi 90 (1992) for sale (private).

In some ways the 90 is a better tow truck - makes for easier reversing
thanks to better lock. Mind, it's got less overhang, so worse in that
respect.

Fairy nuff. I'd also prefer the heavier 110, to try and at least
match the trailer weight. Currently the trailer holds all the tables
that used to go in the 110, so I could make the trailer >80kgs
lighter, and the 110 heavier.

Does it have to be a defender a disco would do the job and for that sort of
money you could buy my "r" plate 300 tdi es premium with allisport
intercooler

IME, the disco is actually not so good as a tow truck - softer suspension,
mostly, I think. It's also got less space inside than a 110 for carting
stuff.

Although I agree that you get more bang for your buck buying s/h discos.
