My son's 200tdi is knocking on idle only. Driving is fine and stationary is fine if you lift the revs up a bit.
Any ideas where we should start investigating at the weekend?
Oil pressure maybe, if so can someone post a link to a suitable mechanical gauge we can buy.
Read somewhere it could be injectors, how would we go about checking those?
Many thanks.

Post a video of the engine at idle so we can hear/see the engine. Slowly, video from all three sides of the engine bay as this will highlight different sounds.

“Knocking” then unfortunately its serious, if it was a tapping or ticking then cam or rockers, injectors etc so any thing that is worn or loose, but with out knowing the approximate area of the engine it can be heard who knows.

Cheap mechanical oil pressure gauge test kits on ebay, under 20 quid with adaptors etc

Has he owned it for a while, ie is this a new problem or is the car new to him?

Thanks for the replies. Haven't done anything with it yet but when he is home tomorrow will see if we can grab a video. I noticed it the other week when I took it to the jet wash but have a feeling its been doing it for a while but he never mentioned it. He's had it for 7/8 years, doesn't always do it apparently.

I had an injector knock on my series, it was an incorrect spray pattern , on he series you can remove injectors and swivel injector pipes round so it sprays on cranking ,
there’s also loosening the injector nuts in turn so that cylinder does not fire and noting any differences.
also check the tappet gaps are set correct
