Couple of vids here

Following the rebuild I wanted to get it going on the ground
temp fuel tank, power to stop solenoid , removed the 200tdi starter off my series 3 , primed to injectors
connected disco rad, and first attempt turned over but no firing so wasn't sure if not primed properly of stop solenoid did not have enough juice on it.
didn't connect up the heater plugs,

bit noisy without exhaust but no smoke on tickover very promising but some white when revved a little which you can see in second video

Thanks for all the help to guide me in stripping it down and getting it back together im well pleased

When I first started mine up how quiet it was compared to before was immediately noticeable.

Maybe when they are fresh they are not clattery old bags of turd?

Well not exactly.
It all has to do with injection timing.
Most having had a timing belt done over the years, some are inadvertently running with a bit too much advance when they were put back together.
Set up injection pump timing properly relative to piston TDC with a dial gauge, you'll find that they are not quite so clattery.
 
On this I used the flywheel notch with pin inserted, the correct pin in the injection pump and lined up the crank pointer and dimple in pulley wheel starts well so must be very close,

Thats very quiet.
I think I would do a good few miles then recheck the pump timing.

Yes will do but won’t be taking the head off, pin in FIP along with flywheel pin, it’ll be a while before into in the series I’ts took 5 years to get this far!

I dont know what series you are sticking it in, but on my s2 you cannot get access to the flywheel timing hole as the gearbox cross member blocks access.
 
It’s. A series 3 diesel , I’ve not had it fitted but expect prob the same as yours , could it be done by loosening mounts and jacking engine up a bit prob only needs 50-70mm clearance

I wish I had a bored a hole through the crossmemebr and welded a bit of scaffold tube for strength and reckon this would be enough for timing access.
Arent series 3 x members removeable?

Mines welded in I think the military is bolt on, right chew on when I needed to get gbox out a few years ago
 
When its in the car the nearside is tight for access, but the offside has some room, so maybe before you fit the engine drill a hole in the flywheel housing and mark the flywheel for future reference?
