I am looking at buying a 200TDI disco and swapping the diesel motor to my 2.5 petrol 110. The indicators are that the 200TDI may have a head gasket problem. Should i turn and walk away, or are the head gaskets a piece of cake to do. Are the cylinder heads known for cracking if so how much for a new one? Am i likely to be opening a can of worms if i pull the head off.
All advice gratefully received.

Easy job, use elring gasket, 3 hole type. New head bolts cos you don't know the history of them too.
3 to 4 hrs work for a semi knowledge able person.
Prices? Dunno. .haven't done it for ages but around £60 for bits from memory?

You might have a problem if the head is U/S,, as, IIRC, they are no longer available new.....

Plenty of heads on ebay etc, they do crack between the valve seats but it doesnt cause any issues at all.
Its quite common for the 200 to pop its gasket every now and then.

Bit the bullet and bought the disco. I will find out when i pull the head off if i've wasted my money.
