Hi. Earlier in the year I replaced the fuel tank on my defender 200. More recently I had an issue where for some reason air was leaking past a the banjo bolt connection on the top of the fuel filter, with the bolt snapping when removing. Long story short this has all now been replaced but can't get rid of what I think are air related issues. I.e. I throttle up the engine, release the revs and can see air in the pipes - spent the last 5 weekends going over all connections again and again and cannot find anything. Video attached for what good watching a video of a lumpy engine will do. Anyways any help much appreciated or after 11 years I'm seriously tempted to move it on.

Have you removed and checked the fuel tank pick up pipe?
Might be worth running it from a 5 litre can resting on thr engine and bypassing the whole fuel system ie after the lift pump to eliminate the whole set up

Where are the pipes you can see air in? - before the injection pump I presume. It's really easy to mis-seat the lift pump connections, even a tiny bit off will let air in. I'd have a really good look at the mating faces of the pipes, maybe even replace them.

I would check your lift pump. Two weeks ago I did my head gasket, fuel system struggled to bleed itself after I refitted the injectors. Eventually it seemed to sort itself out only to start stalling after couple a hundred miles later. Anyway, took off the lift pump only to find out the rocker wasn't even attached to the pump plunger. I suspect it may have been like this for several thousand miles and the FIP was doing all the work, it was only when I asked it to try and bleed through empty lines that it struggled and couldn't quite get rid of all the air.

Hi gents,
Thanks for the responses. I will try to respond in chronological order;

1. All pipes have been removed and blown through with compressor, all definitely clear and all connections checked and checked again for tightness. No daft gauze on the end of the pickup pipe etc.

2. Pipe I can see the air in is the pipe that leaves the lift pump up to the filter.

3. Lift pump: think we are getting somewhere, never checked it up to putting first post on, however after putting my post on noticed another 2 or 3 down from mine in forum re lift pump, I checked mine out and thinks it's past its best. Guess it would explain the lack of fuel on tick over / low revs but ok on high revs as the injector pump doing all the work. Got an electric pump on order, hopefully here at the weekend and I will report back.

Was thinking about wiring the electric pump on a relay with a fused new 12v feed and switching on the stop solenoid - anyone done this, any negatives to it?

Thanks

I fitted elec pump to mine and just switched it on via a dash mounted toggle switch.
Makes running out of fuel a doddle to sort out!
I also made a nice alloy blanking plate where the lift pump once lived.
