have a problem with TDV8, the key wont turn in the ignition, if I disconnect the battery for a few minutes then reconnect it then the ignition will turn, but when i take the key out and then try again it wont turn. We have come to the conclusion that it maybe the gizmo in the column that is the culprit but cant find a replacement except buying a new column.i have seen some second hand ones but not sure what the part no is as there seem to be a few types, the car is to good to scrap as I dont fancy paying four grand for a new column.would anyone know any part numbers that would be suitable, any help would be greatly appreciated.....should of kept my P38!!

Guessing the cause of the problem is likely to be expensive, it needs to go on diagnostics. Is the battery in the FOB OK?

Have a look at this thread it’s long but think the interesting stuff starts around page 6

What you are saying about getting 1 shot at ignition seems to match with removing and replacing a fuse mentioned in some posts, so you may finds some clues/info.
So may lead you somewhere. The OP took his column somewhere it is mentioned in there somewhere to be fixed.

good luck.

Thanks Marjon, will have a look at the above, this where we are upto with it at the moment....
We think its the ECU in the column but you cant buy the ECU as a separate item. You cant buy a column anymore either (Part no LR009778) and if you could its about £4500 + Vat, have seen used columns from various breakers that have been in 2007 TDV8 but dont match the part no QMB501270. Will any column from a 2007 TDV8 work.
Update today - Went to car this morning and the key turned and got it started.Usually you you can just hold the key up against the ignition switch and you can hear it clicking which indicates that there is communication between the ECU and the ignition switch and that should release the steering lock but we think that the pin that locks is stuck open so the steering isnt locked. We have found out that the ECU is not coded to the car so we are assuming that any column from a car of the same year and type will work.

I think someone posted a mod that eliminated the locking pin a while back.
