Sadly an oil pump bolt failure means she needs an engine rebuild. She still starts but the big ends have gone. I replaced the Turbo and had the shells replaced. Seemed ok for a bit but after 20 miles the shells let go again. I think a Crank machining will do the trick. That's not a job I could take on so I wonder if any members might be interested in giving her a new home and new lease of life?

Did you take the sump off to check if the oil pump bolt had come undone?

Shame as I thought the group would have some interested parties. Oh well I'll have to rely on eBay. Yes the bolt was the issue. Repaired the thread, fitted new turbo and changed shells. Ran for about 20 miles and the shells went again. Its a good buy for someone that is capable of doing the rebuild. Sadly that's beyond me.

Are you planning on staying around after the disco has gone ?
 
Shame, thats a really nice looking D2, like the colour too!
Having done a full rebuild I can say that its not really economic, unless you plan to keep the vehicle.
Have you thought about just fitting a complete replacement engine?
A few threads on here about that.

I thought about it - they're very rare though if you want any kind of history and mileage confidence. Most are a part engine sitting on the floor in the corner of a breakers warehouse. Looks like this chap is keeping his if he can. Thanks for the advice though MJI and markomate2!

Thought as this was an 2004 it wouldn't of happened!

I have 2005 and you've made me want to take the sump off for inspection
 
Its only worth hundreds in the condition its in, scrap value only

2005, that really must be the last one sold. I bet there was a good deal there to get it out of the door.

Mine is a 53 plate and I checked mine yesterday , following finding out about GRP's engine. Mine was nice and tight.
Follow Discovery2 websites how to.
Points of interest:
Make sure you can remove the cross member, the PO had welded mine in place.
Get it on a lift if possible as it does make life easier, or get some high axle jacks, and make a note of supporting it so that the front axle hangs down, to give access.
A torque wrench with a low setting is also good. 25Nm for the bolts.

Give it a darn good pressure washing before you start , as the dirt gets in everywhere and refitting the sump is awkward especially if you are worried about dirt ingress.

I'd definitely check. Mine looks like the bolt worked loosed then the thread let go. Easy thing to check.... wish I had!! :(
 
I didnt have to touch my cross member when I removed my engine.
If you buy/hire an engine crane get a 2 tonne one, it has the reach you will need, I just about did mine single handed with a 1 tonne crane but it was a PITA!
You are not that far from me, Im away for the next couple of weeks but when Im back Ill be happy to pop down and give you some pointers.

I was mentioning it in response to checking the oil pump bolt, You had me scratching my head for a while...:)...Altho that is not difficult at times.
