Hi all, Chewy here with another question regarding my 2004 Disco 2, Manual, Diesel, Facelift Td5 that I bought about 18 months ago and have been working on to improve it.

I have just replaced the in tank fuel pump, top and bottom washers on all 5 injectors and a new wiring harness and I'm pleased with the results.... However as always there's a new project to start.

It seems my transfer box is on its way out as I've now got a whine from 3rd gear up with my foot on the accelerator but it goes as soon as I remove my foot. I've also tested this by putting the high/low transmission in neutral and whilst stationary with the handbrake off and wheels chocked run through 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th gears and the noise is gone.

Chatting to my trusty Landy mechanic he agrees that it's most likely the tranny box and agrees going with the refurbished box option over a 2nd hand one.

I've been looking at Ashcroft's but have just been told about Grawell Autos who are local to me in Essex.

Anyone used Grawall autos in Essex before?

I'm also toying with the idea of doing the gearbox at the same time if the price is right, would you do them together?

cant see why you would replace a gearbox that has no problems, unless the noise is coming from the gearbox, if its noisy in 1.2.3 but quiet in 4th and noisy in 5th then it will be a leyshaft bearing.

Hi Gearmuncher cheers for the response, I think maybe I wasn't very clear in my post but as i said I've ruled the gearbox out and am sure its the tranny box.

I will check the oils tomorrow (got to buy a new torque wrench first) as you and my research suggested and decide what to do then.

Ive realised that I failed to put part of my problem in my post, my mistake :(

Occasionally when I release the accelerator The high/low transfer pops into neutral,
my guess is its probably/likely to be a bearing so thats why i'm going to head to Grawall autos in Essex tomorrow to find out about refurbs.

Cheers

jumping in to neutral could be poor adjustment of linkage ie not going in fully or weak detent spring, or could be worse dropping sump plate would reveal more

I'm going to go along with looking at the transfer box and most likely getting it refurbished.
The company come highly recommend so I'll obviously have a chat with them about their thoughts and opinions.

It's 11 years old now and showing 130k on the clock. I replaced the engine at 121k with a used, stripped and rebuilt td5 with history and removed from a car showing 65k

I'm thinking about selling it soon and having a go with another Landy so I want to hand it over to a new owner with things running well and looked after.
