Hi There

Hoping someone can help. I have a niggling issue where the HDC amber warning light comes on if I go over 40mph. It doesn't do this until its warmed up but once its hot, if I drop below 40, then pick up again, on it comes. Slow down, it goes off, speed up, it comes on.

I had the faults cleared last week and it kept the fault c1151 which I understand is can gearbox data failure . I changed the brake light switch and had the faults cleared and after a quick test drive, no faults were found. However I still have the HDC issue.

Additionally, at standstill when cold, if I select HDC, it will show green in 1st and reverse so all seems good with the actual system, once its hot, I have the amber light over 40 mph and when I stop, HDC will still show green in 1st but amber in reverse.

Hoping this rings a bell with someone!!!

All help appreciated. Thanks

My throttle cable was tightened by my son and caused the HDC light to come on but it happened at around 10 mph. I guess yours could be on the verge of being too tight.

Sounds strange I know but as soon as I loosened it again the light stayed off.

Thanks. Really appreciate the suggestion. This should be easy to check and adjust if it is the case. Did a quick google there and it seems like the HDC light and throttle cable issues definitely can be linked

The only thought that I had on this in my situation though was that I tried doing 40mph in 3rd (i.e. at higher revs) and 5th (at lower rev's) and it happens pretty much at 40mph exactly so it seems more road speed than throttle position related. Also, only when warm, which is also weird.

Of course after owning Land Rovers over the last 14 years I have learned to rule nothing out so I'll be giving this a try :)

Thanks again

Hi

So I was away with work there and have just got a chance to get back to look at this. Seems like the TD4 is an electronic throttle so no adjustment? Assuming that Alibro had a petrol version?

So back where I started I think. Does anyone have any more suggestions?

There's lots of hdc threads - use the search window up by your name - the threads, suggestions and results will appear ;)

Thanks

I'm new on here but longer standing on other forums. I have spent more than a fair few hours trawling and aside from all the 3 Amigos threads the term HDC will pull up, I haven't found anything that seems to also be speed related. I'm utterly stumped.

My issue is not permanent. It only occurs after it is warmed up and can be brought off and on at will, in any gear (so at a range of throttle positions) by passing 40mph (on) or dropping back under it (off). It's dead on predictable at that speed.

Just hoping this will mean something to someone

Ok :)

Has yours got the speed sensor on the accelerator pedal (potentiometer)...? I've read that problems with this this can cause hdc yellow to come on.

Brack beet me to it. I'm sure I read somewhere it can be the TPR (throttle position sensor). Not sure about the Freelander as mine is a K series but on other cars I've worked on the accelerator pedal has a potentiometer attached to it. It should be really simple to replace the whole thing but not sure if the ECU needs to be reprogrammed.

Thanks Guys

Yes, I had read about that quite a bit as being a suspect area along with the brake light switch and it would probably be next on the list of things to try. Has skinned knuckles and a contorted back written all over it though!! :)

Is the unit on the TD4 suspect as thinking back, what I saw seemed to relate to the 1.8 engine? Also is it a speed sensor or a throttle position sensor? As I mentioned the problem manifests at 40mph regardless of rev's, which i would have thought would have been more speed sensor related. That said I guess electronics are much more linked these days so I guess it could be 'both' or even if it is just one, it could correlate to the other? I was told there was no fault code (or HDC light) show after the last test drive (I wasn't there) which concerns me but I have definitely had the HDC light show a number of times since. Maybe I need to get it read again

I dont really know much about the accelerator pedal switch - other than it was recommended that I should check mine when I had the yellow hdc light staying on...turned out that mine didn't have this switch fitted.

Other things that I was told to check were (bearing in mind mine is a 1.8)

1st gear switch
reverse light switch,
throttle position switch
check for plenty of slack on the accelerator cable

As your yellow hdc comes on when you go into reverse I would be tempted to check that the reverse light switch works ok and when the engine has warmed up....not much to do with 40mph I know :(
