Good evening all

I have a 2000 discovery 2 TD5 auto and seem to have an issue with my auto box it’s works and shifts sometimes nice sometimes you have to give a bit more throttle to get it to shift, when you put it in drive or reverse from standstill sometime it’s makes like a shunt and bang but not all the time sometime it will go into drive nicely but when it does play up I get the M and S lights flashing aswell as the red light on the auto box D light flashing at me anyone able to assist why or have experience this

The obvious points people will make are, "Have you given it an oil and filter change?"
Which are valid.
But intermittent faults are harder to diagnose. Your BCU may have loose connections or rotten ones through damp, the dreaded P-clip on top of the transfer box may be wearing its way through the insulation providing hit and miss connections inside the insulation.

The BCU itself may be playing up and/or also possibly the XYZ switch.

Others will pop on with suggestions.

Welcome to the forum by the way and don't hesitate to go on the "Introduce yourself" section and do just that.
Cheers.

The Haynes is pretty comprehensive but the RAVE is better.
I have copies but can never find a live download site.
Others will jump on and help out with this hopefully.
Meanwhile...

The Sump on the TD5 auto can be a pain in the arse, the rear most securing bolts are obscured by the gearbox mount, which takes some swearing.

The sump has a magnet in the bottom, the less debris on it the better it's very rare to get chunks of metal on it, if you want a true indication of the health of your box peel the old filter apart.

an example.

Magnet isn't too bad.

Inside of the filter though, tells another story.

Also while you are there, check all the valvebody securing bolts I can almost guarantee atleast some of them will be loose this'll cause a line pressure to drop and the trans will play up and/or slip ;)

8nm for the valvebody bolts and 10nm for the sump securing bolts, or you can just nip the latter up by feel ;)
