Hi there guys. Me again. I just this weekend took my 90 for its first long Drive and have discovered that she appears to run hot. The gauge into the red after a few miles doing over 60 and cools again when I run below 60 or take a brake by the roadside. Never gets too hot below 60.

I've read about problems with the Sender and the Stat and am just wondering if anyone has any diagnostic input for the conditions this happens under.


To add to this I have stopped after I have run the engine into the hot and sat by the roadside and checked the Filler cap for the water reservoir (with a cloth for safety of course) and the reservoir whilst not cold is definately not boiling. The engine block is hot enough to burn (which I'd expect) but I could dip my fingers in the coolant reservoir without any discomfort so I am suspecting a dodgy sender first.

I will have a thermocouple/thermometer on it at the weekend maybe and see what it looks like. Any tips/suggestions?

I had the same problem with mine last year, was a blocked up rad, new one fixed it. I cant remember what it was like removing the cap though, but i dont ever recall any drama from it.

It was only overheating on the motorway at high speed and on very long hill climbs (i was in the alps at the time). Even so it wasnt badly overheating, wouldent have knowen about it if it wasnt for the gauge.

Are you for sure on this? Anyway I live like 5 miles from Steve Parker so I'd rather go pick one up in person.

I was suspecting the Rad too because it wouldn't be only at high speed if it were the sender. That or the stat not opening at the right temp.

You can check the thermstat easily by boiling it in a pan! I pulled mine out while too i was having trouble but it was not the problem.
 
Right so I'm fairly convinced it was the sender. I had a thermocouple from work on it this morning and it reads a paltry 65 degrees so I will be having the sender out when I get the chance and getting a new one from Steve Parker sharpish.

Will update with the outcome.

on the drive or at high speed?

my bets on the rad being cacked up.
 
My bets still on him having the old disco sensor on the engine...Get it out and swapped for the parkers one.
 
I had the exact same problem.

Took sensor out...went to paddocks...asked for one with the same thread out of a 19J...stuck it in. All works fine now. Needle never leaves the white.
 
Right. New senders been installed. She now no longer reads in the red. I am given to understand though that she should read in the middle normally.

I am still getting to just over 3/4 of the guage when travelling over 60mph but it will climb no higher than that level. Returns to halfway when travelling below.

Does this seem okay to you fellers or should I be hunting for further cooling problems?
 
Going with the rad as the cause

air locks , drain and refill cooling syttem as per manual
