Evening all,

Pistons out and crank off before everything goes back together with new bearings etc, but I've now seen one cylinder has some marks inside.

Doesn't feel significant and the other three are in good condition, do you think I'll get away with a hone and new rings?

Looks/feels to me like a slight build up of corrosion rather than damage into the cylinder wall.

I reckon that might be the case.
That bore damage looks like water damage?
Was it breathing much before you stripped it?

I would still try the hone first, you never know you might strike it lucky.

I'll get some stones and give it a go first.

Agreed, looks like some water has gotten in there. I bought the engine blind on a pallet so history unknown, hence stripping. Unfortunately it wasn't in as good a condition as I'd hoped.

well if a hone and a new piston rings only gets you a year or two that might be good enough.
The 200 can run okay even when well worn.

Will update when I've done something, it's going into a Series so won't do more than 3k miles a year, but while I'm at this point I'd rather not cut corners.

My series 2 tdi breaths like thomas the tank engine, still runs okay apart from the breathing, starts well, pulls well.

All cylinders look like showing original honing marks, so can’t be worn much at all, have you measured internal diameters, would have thought the stained areas polish off

Yeah I'm surprised at the condition of the cylinders considering how bad a state it was in externally, dirt, rust, seized pulleys etc.

I've got a couple of honing tools to try this weekend, might also give it a rub with some light polishing compound, or valve lapping paste?

I wouldn’t go near it with valve lapping paste and if the original hone lines are there it won’t need any more, the rusty stains as long as no pitting not an issue, just an oily cloth if it’s standing a while
Have you gapped the rings in the bore to check the end gaps with book they might be in spec

I'll have another attempt at cleaning the staining off, but it didn't seem to shift before with an oily rag.

Not had rings off the pistons yet to check gap, that's a job for tomorrow.

Fingers crossed I'll have a couple of honing tools to borrow tomorrow too, so if it doesn't shift with another clean I'll give those a go.

How bad would it be to put existing rings back in if I gave the cylinder a light hone?

Assuming they're in spec, surely it's better than the inevitable Brit Part replacements?

just checked what i bought and didnt include rings as they were fine with the gaps, and i would sooner keep original than britpart rings but i got my stuff from turner engineering which have quality bits. whats your bearings like

Bearings weren't too bad but I've got replacements for them all along with camshaft bearings.

So it seems a bit silly to not change the rings while I've got it all apart, but I need to draw the line somewhere as I've just bought a new house and can't keep hiding money from her 👀

Light hone/new shells/rings and stick it together, in the old days this was called a top and tail.
I would defo fit new rings, bet you a coffee the old one have lost their twang!
I took some out of a truck the other day and was amazed how much depth they had lost.

Do not go mad with the hone and try and remove all the staining as you will shag the bore.

So the staining cleaned up, but there's a slight bit of pitting you can just about feel with a bare finger.

I know it should be bored and lined, or oversized piston, but I'm tempted to put it back as it is and see how it runs.

Edit, rings are out of spec so will be getting replaced. I'll call the machine shop on Monday and see what it'll cost to rebore and maybe liner, vs oversized pistons.

My 2286 in April 23 cost £240+ vat for a 20thou rebore and got some new set MAHLE pistons £90 off eBay
Thanks,
I'm at the point now where I need to draw the line in terms of spending really.

I think I'm going to put it back together with new rings, hone the remaining cylinders and see how it runs.

With the little use it's going to have I'd rather take the chance than spend another few hundred quid right now.

I've a full workshop to use so even though I'd rather not have to take the engine out again any time soon, it's not a big deal if I do need to in 6 months.
