•Hi All,
•I recently purchased a 200tdi 'project engine' to overhaul in preparation for replacing my ageing 200tdi 12L. The engine was advertised as having a broken piston ring (metal fragments in sump) but when I stripped it i found some damaged cam followers and evidence of overheat on the cam. I also found what looks like some cracks in the casting in the vicinity of the cam bearings and 'rough edges' around the orifices from the cam housing to the sump. I'm pretty inexperienced at engine rebuilds and am uncertain if I have a problem with my block or not. The lines that looks as though they might be a small cracks could be a line in the original casting? There are 4 of them in similar positions adjacent to the No1, 2, 3 and 4 cam bearings. Its hard to see if they are cracks or flaws in the surface of the casting. Can anyone please advise - is my block a right off or are these features common/usual. Many thanks

Can't see the photos very well but seems OK to me. They look like casting marks and the rough edges are normal

Kev - thank you. Thats much appreciated. If you can see the pictures on a larger screen there is a fine line emanating from the bearing to the sump orifice. Thats a relief if they are casting marks. i wasn't sure if the damage/heat in the cam as a rsult of the damage had caused cracks. The rough casting edges also looked a little rough as though there had been additional damage

you cam journals arent showing signs of overheating i think your looking at the result of the hardening process

Thats also a relief. Thanks James. I really appreciate the expert advice. The rough edges to the casting holes through from the cam housing to the sump just looked too rough to be the result of a normal manufacturing process. If that's how they are that's a relief there isnt anything more serious to worry about. Thank you

yes thats how they are, they are only drain holes so finish isnt important
