Hi all. I would be really grateful if anyone could offer any advise for the following-
Yesterday, I had a call from the wife saying that the engine in the car started to make a knocking noise, so she turned it off immediately. I arrived with the trailer and winched it up and took it home. I decided I needed to hear it, so tentively turned it over. It sounded like it turned a couple of turns and then got compressed to early and kicked back. My thoughts turned to the cam belt after hearing this- thinking it may have jumped a tooth and now running advanced. I have just stripped all the front off and checked the timing marks and they all line up and nothing else appears un-toward. I then considered the fuel pump belt until I read this-

'Incidentally, this drive belt for the 2.7-litre engine is not timed to the pump or engine, so it’s a simple matter of taking the old one off and fitting the new one with its new tensioner. That’s not the case for the later 3.0-litre TDV6, in which the pump needs to be accurately timed to the engine, making it a more involved job.'

So now I'm out of ideas. It didn't sound to me like bottom end noise.
The engine turns over nicely by hand with plenty of compression. Although I haven't yet done compression test.
The car is a Range Rover sport 2006 with 97000 on the clock.

Any help would be extremely appreciated!!!!!

Quick update-
Dropped the oil this morning, looked ok to start with, but after filtering it I found afew small bronze coloured flakes . I then removed the oil filter and found a lot of bronze coloured oil . Then I removed the sump bowl and found quite a lot of bronze coloured bits .

So I'm now thinking its a main or big end bearing. Therefore a body off/engine out and refurb job.

It’s possible to remove engine without body off, but the difficulty starts trying to source anew engine, the re con parts are not readily available and some of the companies advertising re con engines have terrible reputations.

hi

sorry to hear of ur issues , as @johnlad mentioned some engine rebuilders have a very bad reputation

looking around £5k for a decent recon engine

u might be very lucky and be able to rebuild it, if u look on the D3 forum a few have rebuilt there engines

https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/index.php

known issues are , snapped crank, oil pump cover breaking , this was normally 2007 onwards but u won’t know for sure until u strip it down some more
